Campus is beautiful and quite safe during days as well as nights. The university is overcrowded. The football program has brought on a lot of attention and more students are enrolling, leading to larger classes and accommadation problems.(Note:football games=vulgar drunks, not a good time) Only freshmen are guaranteed housing and renting an apartment in Boone is ridiculously expensive. Don't expect to be treated like an individual. I've met with my academic advisor around 10 times and she still doesn't know my name.
The art program is decent. The building that houses the art department despertely needs to be renovated. Professors are nice enough but expect you to always see things their way. Not helpful in a subject that is largely interpretive.

The campus is constantly being renovated! So be prepared to find alternate routes to classes. The finished buildings are fantastic though. ASU has a good library, and is constructing a new dining hall.
As far as the art department goes, the professors encourage creativity - as long as it is done their way. I have received little valuable instruction and am looking to transfer to a school with a reputable program. Art professors are mostly hippies, too old to remember their topic, or just stuck in their ways. Out of 4 classes this year, I had 1 professor willing to sit down and discuss/explain etc. The building is terrible. Very few windows make for bad lighting. Bad lighting = not so good paintings!

I am a 22 year old instate transfer student and a political science major. I had attended UNCC and a community college before coming to app. While being a full 4 years older than the incoming freshman i found my experience socially to be quite poor. Students at UNCC are much more open, while the students here seem to find themselves bringing their own brand of what college should be. Unless you enjoy winter sports there isn't really much to look forward to throughout the year. The small town feel in Boone is long gone, if you're in state I would recommend the many other options other than App St.

I love Appalachian! This is my second semester, and I'm enjoying the cold weather, to an extent. It does make it hard to go out and have fun. I'm in Watauga, which is a wonderful learning community. It has really created a intimate feeling which is great for such a large school. The professors in the Political Science department are very interested in the students sucess. I love it here so much that I'm considering hanging around for the summer sections too! Being from Wilmington, which is near the beach, the cold weather was at first intimidating, but I've grown used to it. Invest in a WARM coat!
