From my own experience over the past year and a half I have decided that Blue Ridge Community College has 3 main groups of people. There are the very bright and intelligent students who are not financially able to start off at a 4 year school and make the best of their transfer years. There is the older group who, who after all the factory and plant layoffs need to come back in order to hone their skills and get ready to go back out into a different world. Then there are the others, which is the non-high school graduate group who are just going through to make their families stop griping at them for not accomplishing anything. Blue Ridge Community College is surrounded by various wealthy communities such as Flat Rock and Laurel Park, but is also school to many of the poverty stricken communities such as Green Meadows, Edneyville and Jackson Park. That may be why the majority of the parking lot is filled with new Mustangs and Civics, while everyone else rides the less accessible Apple Valley Transit System. Blue Ridge is a very nice school with very good teachers, but if you are not used to the diversity of a Wealthy/Poor, English/Spanish, Teenager/Adult system it can be very overwhelming.
