 | Quite Bright | This school is great if you want to be a nursing or business major. The school is VERY SMALL. It feels like a high school sometimes. The class sizes are amazing. All of the teachers you have will know your name and your personality within weeks of starting a class. The social life is good, but not great. Unless you play a sport or are in some kind of campus club, you basically have to fight for a social life. The school overall has a good reputation, but doesn't have a very rigorous curriculum. I love Queens!
Sure, the food sucks, and everyone is always complaining about something, but rarely would anyone dream about leaving. Truth is, the food isn't as bad as we make it out to be, and I think it's human nature to complain.It is beyond easy to get involved in the Queen's community. A senior I knew last year said she had to try really hard not to become involved. There are so many organizations on campus, we have a clubs and org's fair each semester to easily locate a club of interest. And, if there is not a club you are looking for, you can easily start a new club on campus. Intramural sports are pretty popular and going on all year round. Student Life is easy to get involved with, whether you want to be on SGA, the Honor Council, or Campus Union Board. Plus Greek Life is HUGE, but at the same time if you're not interested there is a big community of non-greeks on campus. Queens has 4 sororities (Phi Mu, Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, and Kappa Delta) plus AKA, and 2 fraternities (Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa Sigma). Greeks are everywhere on campus, being some of the most involved students on campus. Though, Queen's Greek life is completely different from that of a big State school. Being on a small campus can have it's downsides, such as a fast rumor mill. But, there are pros, such as being able to recognize most faces you see on a daily basis, and knowing the names of people not in your own grade. While school spirit is not anywhere near as high as a public university, we do have a great basketball team. Student Life is constantly hosting events throughout the year to help students get involved or to have school spirit. Each semester there is a carnival, there are special events for every holiday (like pumpkin carving), most semesters we have an exam break breakfast (the professors cook and serve us breakfast at 11pm), and midnight on ice (midnight ice skating). There is ALWAYS something to do on campus. Of course, if your looking to party this is not the school for you. Some partying takes place at a few off campus houses every weekend, and students host their own dorm room parties, but that's about it. The greek houses are always hosting mixers, though! Of course, education is a HUGE part of Queens!
I love the majority of the professors here. I'm an Environmental Science major and I am constantly dropping in my professors' office's just to say hello or to ask a question. The staff is extremely helpful and willing to help you in any way they can, they want you to succeed! In the science department we are very hands on, constantly doing field work. There are not research opportunities available like at public schools, but professors are willing to help students find opportunities. The work is not too hard, but you are always learning. Another plus is being able to wake up ten minutes before class and still getting there with minutes to spare, because it's such a small campus, but not too small. The dorms are each great in there own way, most of them having been revamped over the past summer. If your interested in spiritual life there is a lot of opportunities to get involved there as well. A chapel service is held every thursday at 11:00 (a mandatory break for all classes, but attendance is not mandatory for chapel), there is worship held every Tuesday night at 9:00 ran completely by students, there is a Young Life chapter, and various bible studies held all throughout the week. There is also a plethora of churches to attend on Sundays within 5 minutes of Queens, not to mention the Baptist Church right across the street.I love Queens, there are so many opportunities here to become involved and hold leadership positions. The professors are great! Plus an internship is required which means more work experience! And don't forget the JBIP trip offered to every student (check out queens.edu for more info).
