Honors
student have access to a range of unique opportunities and
benefits both in and out of the classroom. Honors
courses are reserved exclusively for our students and their enrollment is limited to 15. Accordingly, Honors students do not find themselves competing with the entire student body during course
registrations. Honors sections of general education requirements, like the
Humanities courses, give Honors students a distinct advantage as they
plan their schedules and register for courses. For details
regarding the unique nature of these courses, please refer to
the program's curricular component. PAID RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS
Networked Access
Another great
benefit of the Honors Program is what we called “networked
access.” University campuses, and UNCA in particular, offer a
dizzying array of academic, pre-professional, and co-curricular opportunities to our
students - so many in fact that it is not
uncommon for students to feel overwhelmed. The challenge is
to communicate these opportunities to students in meaningful and memorable
ways that will encourage them to take advantage of the
resources at their figure tips and to maximize their undergraduate
experience. This is one of the critical functions of the Honors Program - to keep our students “networked” -
aware of the unique and exciting opportunities offered on our
campus. In this way, we advocate for Honors students
and guide them toward resources of which they might otherwise
have been unaware.
Distinction and Recognition as an
Honors Student
Distinction as a University Scholar is our Program's
highest graduating honor, and a goal that we encourage all
our students to attain. However, it is also admirable
to graduate as an Honors student - which recognizes students
who have remained in good standing with the the program through their final semester. Both are meritorious achievements that
are recognized by employers and graduate schools.
Prior to graduation, the Honors Program also recognizes outstanding underclass students be inducting
them into the Circle of Scholars - an award conferred
on those who have demonstrated promise to achieve and maximize
all six program components (curricular, co-curricular, study abroad, service learning,
advanced undergraduate research, and post graduate preparation). To learn
more about this elite group within the Honors Program and
the process by which inductees are selected, please see our
Circle of Scholars website.
Student Leadership The Honors Program is governed jointly by the Honors
Student Advisory Council (HSAC), and its corresponding faculty committee. The former is an important conduit for student input into
the activities and day-to-day operation of the Honors Program. The HSAC, therefore, offers opportunities for student leadership through event
coordination, planning, and programmatic reform. Though our Honors students
are among the most active student leaders on campus, many of them also take a leadership role in the HSAC
each semester.
Study Abroad Funding
The Honors Program also offers small
stipends to Honors Students who wish to study abroad and
are not otherwise supported by University subsidies. The amount
and number of awards vary from year to year depending
upon availability and demand. To apply for these funds,
please contact the program staff or down load this printable information sheet and application. Study Abroad Subsidy Grants
