T
HE UNC at Chapel Hill, founded in 1789, is a public, comprehensive institution.  Programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Division of Continuiting Education, the Graduate School, and the Schools of Dentistry, Education, Information and Library Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work.  Its 729-acre campus is located in Chapel Hill, eight miles northeast of Durham, and includes that two oldest state university buildings.

Since opening its doors as the nation's first public university in 1793, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has earned a worldwide reputation for excellent academics, cutting-edge research and distinguished public service.  Often called a “public ivy”, Carolina is known best for its:

Devotion to broadening students' views of the world through superior teaching, scholarship, and hands-on research.  Carolina students spend two years exploring a broad spectrum of subjects before specializing in fields ranging from science and technology to business, the humanities, and liberal arts.

Intense and friendly collaboration among students and faculty as they push the boundaries of knowledge and make new discoveries.

Dedication to improving people's lives through economic development, education, health care, human services and the arts.

Commitment to attracting outstanding students through premier scholarships, such as the prestigious Morehead-Cain and Robertson Scholarships, as well as University awards, including the Carolina Scholars and the Pogue Scholarship programs.

Commitment to access and affordability for people from all walks of life.  Through the Carolina Covenant, students from low-income families can graduate from Carolina debt-free.

Friendly and unusually welcoming atmosphere of Chapel Hill—often described as the perfect college town.  From classrooms and residence halls to athletic events to clubs and theaters, the experiences shared at Carolina build special bonds that last a lifetime.
