Super Brilliant
I'm a bio major working towards a bachelor of science with a double minor in neuroscience and chemistry all the while taking the premed requirements. Wake offers and requires a very liberal education, with greatly variable and difficult classes to overcome. But one cannot find disappointment in fully appreciating the breadth of knowledge you'll acquire about all sorts of disciplines which will truly help one decide upon a major, which is done in the spring semester of one's sophomore year. Wake doesn't get you locked up into some major you thought would be cool and you realize is just not your thing, like lots of larger state schools. Speaking of size, I don't think I've ever had a class where the professor didn't know my name, and that included the well-populated intro science classes. It's a tightly-knit community dedicated to academic excellence and it produces an almost palpable ambiance of this scholasticism.

Quite Bright
My experience at Wake was outstanding. The level of contact that students have with professors on the campus is almost unparallel for a national university. I was frequently invited over to my professor's homes, and many of them are the sorts of people who will stop everything and talk to you for an hour about school, current events or your personal goals when you visit them in their offices. I was looking for a job in DC, and one of my professors placed a call to one of his friends at a policy institute there and offered to fast track and earmark my application. The connections, if you take advantage of them, are excellent.

Wake frequently gets dubbed as a "conservative" top university, and I would like to take this opportunity to dispel that myth. In aggregate, Wake is a moderate school, although it has become more liberal since I have been there. I think it will continue in this direction as we just inaugurated a new president and the student body has been diversifying. I don't say this to scare off more conservative applicants. Whatever your political and social leanings, you will find people of differing opinions who will challenge you. But just for the record, the GSSA (Gay-Straight Student Alliance) and College Democrats each have a larger active membership than the College Republicans on campus. The Greek scene is dominant, but there are plenty of other active social circles if you look for them, such as the Theater House, Tech House, Huffman House, SEAC (environmental) house etc etc. The arts district downtown is really getting promoted as well, and we just recently had a huge student art auction for a local charity there. All in all, Wake is a great place to explore your education, and there really is something for everyone if you care to look.

I'm extremely happy to say I'll be Demon Deacon for life once I graduate. Sure, not everyone in the universe has heard of WFU, but once you come out of here you are prepared to take on anything and people realize this. It's not uncommon for Wake grads to compete against Ivy Leaguers for jobs or grad school spots. While our GPAs may be somewhat lower, most people are aware of this. I've heard some companies even add .5 to our GPAs before comparing us to other candidates. The sporting events are also great. Tickets are free and relatively easy to get a hold of.

There are far too many negitive reviews here to do this unversity justice...if you are thinking about Wake... LISTEN UP. Yes, there is a homogeneous population here. I am white so i am not going to preach about being a different ethnicity and what campus life is like. However, the average student at Wake is by no means close-minded. It is far too difficult to get in to Wake to allow truly ignorant people. So please, do not look at wake just because of the mostly caucasian student body. Yes, there are a great deal of conservatives here but i fail to see that as a limitation. No one will try to brainwash your ideas and slap a "W" sticker on your car. There is a great deal of wealth here. But the point of college is to be educated and not comparaing each others material means. Greek life is big but it won't keep you from froming friendships. I didn't pledge but many of my friends did and it put nothing between us. Academics are great despite the well earned nickname Work Forest. My advice...time managment. I guess that i am trying to stress the importance of realizing that some negitive aspect of Wake are common on some level to all universities. Wake students are smart, educated, and generally friendly and warm (especially to newcomers). Please look at Wake. I love this university and hope that everyone who looks at this site will visit Wake and not be discouraged by negitive comments.
