Having lived on campus at Warren Wilson for nearly four years, I feel like I have had the pleasure of seeing nearly all the sides of itself that this campus has to offer. While there had been some bumps in the road, I would say that my experience at Warren Wilson has been one that I would not trade.

From my freshman orientation to present, the faculty, staff, and student body have been warm. While not everyone I have met have been come mainstays in my social life, a vast majority of them have (including professors, work crew supervisors, and even Deans). Above and beyond being friendly and genuinely caring, these individuals are truly intelligent and gifted. I have received great counsel (academic and personal) for innumerable places.

The English department, like many other departments including Chemistry and Education), is grossly overqualified. Without a doubt, these individuals could be teaching at Ivy League schools. However, they are teaching here and giving their expertise and individualized attention to their students (which is easily done considering that I have never been in a class with over thirty people and do not consider it to be strange if my class is only of six people). Lectures are enlightening, discussions are engaging, and feedback is easily available if one wishes to find it. Professors are more than willing to create a personal relationship with their students and that really improves the dynamic of classrooms and of individual learning.

The Work program has not only given me skills which I feel confident will be able to help me later on in life, but it has also given my another niche. My work crew has become more like close friends who strive to do well by the college and help each other through difficult times (be they work, academic, and personal in nature). However, also, this situation like the academic one is not smothering. Help, insight, and what not is given when asked and reserved when requested.

The Service program, while difficult to always fit into a week, has also been rewarding allowing me (after some trail and error) to find a service project that resonates with me. While I work with children, my roommate works with animals. Nearly any passion can be accommodated.

The resources for a college this size are superb. While our library may be considered small, the interlibrary loan system connects Wilson students to huge academic possibility. Under represented groups are well represented and respected at Wilson as seen by various resource centers around campus.

While there are acts of vandalism, the community often rises to the occasion to remedy the situation. Because of the strong sense of community, I can safely say that I have never been in a position on campus where I have felt unsafe.

There is the use of alcohol and illicit drugs on campus, but I would say no more than any other campus. I have said to friends and family that are not familiar with Wilson that I would rather be at a school which is known for drinking PBR and smoking some joints than a school known for doing coke and pounding hard liquor. All in all, I would say that Wilson is no different from any other college campus in concerns to our substance use.

All in all, Wilson has been a great experience. I feel like through out my time here I have made lasting friendships, been prepared for graduate school, and generally had a good time.

I would not recommend anyone attend Warren Wilson College. Once you enter, you must remain at Warren Wilson College if you wish to finish in four years; otherwise, you will have to start over from scratch at any other college or university, as very few other institutions will accept Warren Wilson credits for transfer. The amount of date rape is grossly underreported, with approximately 30 sutdents being sexually assaulted or raped a year compared to the reported number of 7 or 8 a year. The college administration implicitly encourages binge drinking and drug use, as well as students unwilling to accept the opinions of others or paticipate in democratic process. A rash of racial hate crimes committed in the last few years have not been addressed sufficiently, and, as a result, several students have left, or have remained to feel alienated and unwelcome at the institution they have paid a great deal of money to attend. The academic standards are low, and have been recently lowered. The college has failed to hire non-white faculty over and over again, although new staff positions are being added all the time. My degree from Warren Wilson College has qualified me for minimum wage work, and the much-touted work program prepared me for the same kind of work. I am currently attending graduate school in order to be better prepared to support myself in the future.

Warren Wilson is truly a unique school. It is, though a work college, which many students don't realize until they are here. I personally love the work program. Some of the jobs only exist so every student will have one, but many of the jobs are educational and beneficial for life in the real world. Students do everything such as recycling and solid waste management, electrical upkeep of the campus, building maintenance, and even plumbing. There is also a farm on campus where students feed the pigs, plow the fields, and move the cows. It is true that many people come to Warren Wilson without realizing the work commitment they have made. I think the school should do a better job of explaining to prospective students the work that is expected.
Another aspect of the 'triad' is service. Students are expected to do 100 hours of community service in 4 years. It is a joke. Students do not take this seriously and 100 hours is nothing. In my first year alone i completed 86 hours and I could have easliy done more. Instead of making students want to do service, the school just makes you do service to graduate. i have talked to so many seniors that have said something like "man I have to do like 50 hours of service to graduate, this sucks." and that's not how it should be, people should truly want to do service.
Academics have been interesting and I have enjoyed them. One thing I have been extremely dissapointed in is the art department. This area is extremely underfunded and only has two full time professers. It is rediculous. The photography program is lacking seriously. It is almost impossible to even get into a photo class until you are a junior unless you are an advanced student, in which case you will be done with all of the photo classes offered in one year. The science dept. is fantastic here, but art is at the bottom.
My overall experience at Warren Wilson has been great. The people that I have become close to are people I will cherish for life. They are real and fantastic people. I think this is a great school for some things, but a frustrating one for others. I have decided to leave this school, because I want to learn more about art, but I do not regret going here, it is an awesome environment. I am only leaving because of the lack of classes in the art dept., if that area were stronger, I would stay. Oh, and the rumor about everyone smoking pot is pretty true, but it isn't true that if you aren't into that you should stay away. You'll find people like you here.

Super Brilliant
Warren Wilson College is the shit.
If you are looking for a college life that is similiar to summer camp, then WWC is for you.
The academics can be very rigorous, if you want them to be. Of course there are the occasional kids who don't want to actually work... but we love them because they're a good party.
I have learned more at wilson in one year than i did in highschool in four. The classes are very personal and conversations are very much encouraged. This fact is especially wonderful at wilson because most students are very informed and intelligent. At wilson, no one is afraid to speak their mind because everyone is accepted for who they are.

Smoking pot is very big here. If you can't/won't appreciate the health benefits of mary jane, do not apply. At the orientation we hiked up a mountain and sang songs, drinking PBR's and smoking pot. We howled at the moon and slept in sleeping bags in a cabin. We even made all of our meals from organic scratch.
If you are looking for a college experience that, in addition to great classes, includes skinny dipping, cow tipping, garden smoking, and an all around amazing cast of people to say the least, then wilson is for you.
