I received my bachelor's and 2 master's degrees from UNO in 5 years. This wasn't really because of any help I received from advisers or faculty members, but because I was determined to really research the program requirements so I wouldn't be around for too long. I have both good and bad news to share in this review, although overall my feelings are neutral toward this university (good/bad cancel each other out...kind of).
I'll start out with the good. The English Dept. has one of the best faculty team at UNO, and most professors regardless of department/school are decent people. To be honest, I've only had a problem with a few professors during undergraduate. As a graduate student, I found myself more frustrated with many faculty members. They seem to have this arrogant attitude OR they're so self-absorbed that they could care less about you or your needs. However, there are still more good than bad professors, and by this, I mean in terms of competence, personality, and teaching quality. I also liked the small campus size; it has a comfortable feel that isn't overwhelming. Overall, I had a better undergraduate experience...
The bad: see comments below (down a couple of paragraphs). In short, I'm disappointed with how the university administrators deal with diversity. Their methods of recruitment, retention, and interacting with non-white students are overall unacceptable, and minority representation in academic affairs, curriculum, and leadership is sad. They have this very obsolete mindset that almost gives the impression of intolerance. Some (but not all) professors have the same condescending attitude, and these few bad apples rarely get reprimanded or terminated (and some really need to go). My other complain is the overall quality of students. Most are one or more of the following: immature, indolent, materialistic, racists, simple-minded, super-fanatical (in terms of political ideology), or outright incompetent. Many people act like they're still in middle/high school and do/say stupid things. There are some intelligent people on-campus, but it's like a treasure hunt to find them. And it's no surprise that UNO isn't the most prestigious campus. Due to these (and other less salient reasons), I'm going out-of-state for Ph.D. studies.
Some advice: I've heard too many people complain that bad advising and poor communications among faculty/staff have really screwed some people over. For instance, my boyfriend is on the 6-year plan and just learned that his so-called adviser screwed up his program so that he took an extra 18 hours of crap work. Ironic thing is that your adviser is actually paid to help you, yet more people run into problems. If you go here, look carefully at your department/school catalog for the fine print and policies. Meet with your adviser at least once per semester; make her or him help you devise a long-term plan that pretty much determines when you'll graduate if you follow certain steps. Also check to see if there's a way to fudge with the policies (e.g., finding a way to count 1 class more than once or substituting a class with something else). ALWAYS verify what you and your adviser come up with another adviser so you don't come out screwed.
GOOD
-Most professors are overall great people, decent teachers.
-Omaha is an OK town...
-Technology systems are excellent. Computer labs in every college, and some have free printing.
-Small campus size (and fairly easy to find buildings).
-Easy to find a graduate assistantship.
BAD
-Lack of accountability for faculty/staff who are not doing their jobs OR who are racist, sexist, or doing something they're not supposed to be doing.
-Administrators tend to fire the great non-tenured teachers and keep the tenured bad apples who make life a living hell.
-Winter weather sucks.
-Has a commuter-campus feel, since many students are over 24, have families, or work full-time. Not much to do, and if you try to put on a campus event, a very low turnout.
-Many faculty members don't respond to students in a timely manner.
-Mostly inept administrators with an arrogant attitude (most, not all).
-Unless you have a graduate assistantship where you can park in the faculty lot, you'll be hunting for parking.
-Not much diversity around here...and if there is, groups are close-knit and isolated. -Most students regardless of their level are ignorant and incompetent. | | Apr 05 2005 | Education | | |
