When I first went to UNM-LA I was heart broken about going to a UNM Community Branch. But I quickly learned that by chance I had made an amazing decision and my experiences at the UNM Main campus have only confirmed this.

It is a small campus with parking from the local sports field next to. At times this can be annoying since High Schoolers will use the same lot but it really does not turn out to be a problem. But the campus is always clean and well kept. This is a small town for sure. Keep that in mind. But it is not that far from Santa Fe.

Being a 2 year university the class list may seem a little lacking compared to a 4 year school. but it does have what you need. The teachers here are among the best I ever had. And this is now 6 years later for me. Being in Los Alamos the science and math teachers are top notch since some of them work for the Lab near by. This is the place to start your college life and make it. This is even true for those that are not in the fields of math and science. This campus makes sure they have good teachers for all subjects.

I would strongly suggest to anyone starting out to go to UNM-LA for their two year Associate's degree and then continue on to their 4 year college of choice. It will give you the help you need to be prepared for thee next two years as well as you will feel great about yourself leaving with a great gpa no matter how you did in high school and you will feel the accomplishment of having an degree half way to getting you Bachelors.

As some last pieces of advice, if you are a New Mexico resident you will keep you Lottery Scholarship and be able to use it at the 4 year University as well afterward. But be aware that if you retake a class for any reason it will not count towards the 12 credit hours required to keep the Lottery Scholarship. So make sure you have at least 15 credit hours.
At UNM-LA you will have only 1 or 2 advisers tops. At UNM Main I have had 6-7 plus. That's a bad thing. I would also suggest not going to UNM's Main Campus afterward without warning you that the wonders of UNM-LA are a fluke in the UNM system. There are only a hand-full of great teachers at UNM Main campus and the student population lacks intelligence. The complete opposite of UNM-LA.

So, with that in mind. Take your time at UNM-LA and make sure that all of your credits will transfer to the 4 year school you wish to attend after 2 years at UNM-LA.
As a bonus, when I was at UNM-LA tuition was about $500 for a semester. Save your money and go to a great 2 year school!
