Yes, drinking, but also thinking and high academic standards. Literally in a class by itself: a superb, small liberal arts university.

Two types of students will be happy at Colgate. The first type is the affluent jocky caucasian who wishes to get a respected degree while partying as much as possible with people in a fraternity centric atmosphere. The second type is the totally devoted student who does not mind having a very limited social life for 4 years.

Colgate is a great place, for the right type of student. Admissions seems to be obsessed lately with touting the schools diversity. However, I still remember one of the first days my freshman year realizing this was the whitest place I had ever been. I went to a VERY diverse high school and whenever I see Colgate emphasize its diversity be it in literature, classes, or at some sort of function, I can't help but laugh.

The social scene completely revolves around drinking (and other substances). If your looking to booze for 4 years, Colgate can make that happen. However, being as we are up in Hamilton, there really are not many other social options. Again, the school loves to paint a different picture in the stuff admissions sends out, but the fact of the matter is while they do try and offer alternatives to the bars, frats, house parties, jug, etc they cant schedule something "alcohol free" every weekend. And when there is a school event, its usually wrapped up by 10 or 11.

While the schools have bought the houses, there really does not seem to be a decline in the greek system. We cant rush until sophomore year, so the schools figure of how many kids participate in Greek life includes all grades. When you look at how many kids are Greek that are eligible to be in frats/sororities, its a much much higher figure. If your sure you are not interested in Greek life, you would be better served looking elsewhere.

Not so bright
If you are white, rich, conservative vanilla, this is a place for you. If your idea of fun is excessive binge drinking and hanging out with people who feel superior b/c their parents have money, you will love it. If you want to go to school to expand your horizons and gain a new perspective, avoid at all costs. This school has helped me understand how Bush got elected twice....
