STAY AWAY! I just tranferred to a larger school. There are so many things wrong with Elmira College.
Academics - This is a diploma mill. You pay $35,000 a year and can sleep right through 4 years and get a degree. No challenge what-so-ever. You have to complete manditory community service. You also have to attend 2 years of "Encore" which are very below par fine arts events.

Administration - The school could careless about you as long as they have your money. Period.
Dining - The food is simply terriable. It is over priced and the dining services staff is made up of mostly former prison inmates from the maximum security prison (which is located 1/2 a mile from campus!)

Security - Yes, Elmira College has a beautiful campus, however the City of Elmira is a very very unsafe place. The campus is located between downtown Elmira and the main residential area of the city. It is NOT safe. Period. Day or night. My car was broken into 3 times in 11 months. People get stabbed and shot all of the time in Elmira. The school will tell you it is safe but that is a total LIE!

Money - Elmira costs double of what it should. The school wastes money on painting EVERYTHING purple (even the A/C units on top of the campus center). The use purple rock salt for goodness sake. Rather than investing in better professors or more programs they waste is on things like a $20,000 antique purple phone booth in the administration building or $150,000 on iris door handles.

The President of the college is a drunk. He can be seen stumbling around at college events.
Over all there is nothing good about Elmira except the pretty campus. DO NOT BE FOOLED! If you visit, they will make it seem like it is the best place in the world. Do not pay this much money for a school with no name or reputation. I have met many alumni around town who are working at Wal-Mart and gas stations.STAY AS FAR FAR FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE!

For people looking for a great small private college Elmira would be a great choice. If you're looking for a large place or a place where you can just participate in the campus minimally then don't even consider it. The most important thing to remeber about Elmira is that it prides itself on being like a family a home away from home. There are plusses and minuses to that. The main reason people are usually dissatisfied with the college is that they never visited the campus before they came or they didn't pay attention when they did. Anyone spending a few hours on campus can get a really good idea of what this college is all about.

Like all colleges (at least all I've ever gotten to know) the main problem lies with the perceived reputation of the administration. For the most part the administrators at Elmira are some of the most dedicated hardest working people I've ever met and the really care about the institution and the students. Unfortunately, like most colleges the faculty resents being told what to do and some see it as their mission to convince the students that administrators are evil. This is a very vocal but more importantly very small minority. Overall Elmira College is an excellent place to spend four years of your life IF you decide to attend after visiting and making an informed decision.

Elmira College prepared me to think critically and to navigate my way around the world socially, academically, and professionally. While some suggest Elmira "holds hands" with students, I can assure you that the college experience is no greater or lesser than you make it. If you choose to "nestle" and require that to grow into your success, you can find that at Elmira. If you relish your independence and prefer merely a launch pad for your personal goals and aspirations, you'll find that as well.

As is true anywhere, in college in particular or life in general, certain participants or achievers will catch the eyes of the powers that be. That can either become your complaint or motivation. Choose to make other's strides your starting point. Think "I will surpass." Your success comes not from the recognition by others, but in the achievements that cannot be taken from you--those great equalizers like participation and character.I applaud and thank the outstanding faculty who daily give of themselves more than a student could ask, the staff who strive for perfection and work their magic to make things run smoothly and never cease to do so with a welcoming word, and the ambitious and progressive administration without whose vision Elmira's light could have easily been lost under a bushel to the detriment of all.
