I did my masters and then DMA there. It is, as most schools are, what you make of it. They di a good job of speading out the roles and things, so especially as a soprano, don't count on getting more than one major role in any one degree. The directors are WONDERFUL, and are very accomodating. The teachers are good friends, and don't mind if you go into a lesson with someone else if you are doing a duet or something with another person. There are, of course, lots of politics, especially with Performer's certificates, but over all it is a gerat atmosphere, and the halls are great to sing in.

Music - Performance

As a graduat conducting major, I am disappointed in Eastman. Rochester is a small town with nothing to do, and is freezing cold most of the year. It is so depressing here! The quality of education is just fair. Most of my instructors are professional teachers, as oppossed to professional conductors. However, I did not get into Manhattan School of Music or Julliard, so I am not able to take advantage of the musical opportunities found in New York City. There are some talented students here. Many are adults who have taught in schools prior to obtaining advanced degress. However, many never complete the PHD, and leave witha a Masters. I would not recommend Eastman for serious musicians.

Music Education

Eastman School of Music has been the worst experience of my life. I transferred here from Manhattan School of Music because of scholarship money, but there is no comparison in terms of quality and opportunity between the two schools. Eastman faculty are arrogant, untalented and just plain incompetent. They also lack professionalism and a basic ability to teach. The productions preseneted at the Eastman Theatre lack integrity, and politics play a role when it comes to casting shows. The voice teachers have ruined numerous students instruments, the composition department is focused on 20th Century atonal garbage, and the choir is an exercise in screaming. However, the most offensive are the "conducting" graduate students, for they have not a clue as to how to lead an ensemble. This is probably because they let any untalented idiot who "auditions" in. Because other conservatory's far outshine Eastman, I don't think many graduate students will be able to find work after completing their degrees. Students who are intent on a conservatory education should look elsewhere.
