From the moment I set foot on campus, I knew FIT is where I wanted to go. It was the only school I applied to because there is no other place like it. I am a Fashion Merchandising Major and feel like I have gotten a great education during my 3.5 years. I was interested in becoming a buyer and I wanted a city school close to home. The school truly prepares you for the industry. They connect you with great internships and abroad programs. I currently intern for a major Italian luxury fashion label (can’t use the name!) and spent my junior year abroad in Florence, Italy. It is really important to know that you have to be self-motivated at this school. You need to be on top of your credits and grades and what classes you must take in order to graduate. Faculty is there to help you, but you need to seek their help. If you are an independent spirit, this is the school for you. If you get lost in a crowd, it can be rough. There is a lot of schoolwork because you are taking liberal arts (required since it is a SUNY BA or BS) and all of your major electives. Expect to take 6 or 7 classes at a time. It's a competitive industry and a competitive school so you need to be ready to give your best. There is not much social life in school, although there are many clubs and activities to make friends. It's a real urban city commuter school. People come to class and then head back to their lives outside of school. Overall this place is what you make of it. I some people who couldn't handle it and thought New York was too much for them and decided to leave. I love this school and do not miss the "typical" college experience at all. When I do I visit my friends for a dose of the keg party and then catch the train back to where I am really comfortable, which is at FIT in New York City. VISIT THE CAMPUS! Don't just take the plunge! Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into.

I'm in Packaging Design major.
It's pretty nice. Faculty and students are very close so we can get more perticipation. Because we are only 24 students for one class.
Also! we got free MAC from FIT only for Packaging Design students!

I returned to school for a second degree as an adult student and although I have no problem achieving good grades I am unispired creatively and feel the treatment of all students, by everyone from the faculty of the Interior Design Dept, to the registration office, to the security gaurds is rude and condescending. It speaks to their insecurity and arrogance and is unhelpful in any adedemic situation.

THE FITNY is not your average college, it is in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world. Go and enjoy everything the city has to offer and don't worry about trying to drink and hang out. It exists at FIT but the things that you could be doing instead are far more exciting in NYC.

Also don't make friends in your major, make contacts. Friends will steal your ideas but contacts may help get you a job someday.
