I believe that Houghton was a great experience for me. The location is a bit too remote for my liking, though. Despite a certain amount of legalism, each person is allowed to express him/herself freely. The college's atomosphere allows for the building of strong relationships.

My experience as a chemistry major at Houghton has been both intellectually challenging and rewarding. Chemistry is not easy, and i have come to appreciate the challenge of mastering a difficult subject well. Having been accepted into a number of PhD programs, I am leaving Houghton with an excellent preparation for graduate shcool, and in many ways it is significantly better than what larger and more prestigous universities offer. I have also learned many lessons that extend beyond chemistry: hard work, perseverence, patience, and discipline. Learning in a Christian atmosphere, under the guidance of excellent professors has been a wonderful opportunity. The quality of my professors, the high standards they have set, and their desire to see their students learn has been central to my experience and education at Houghton.

Houghton is an excellent liberal arts college. It is for the serious student, someone who is not afraid to be stretched. Houghton is located in a very rural part of western New York. If you are 100% into the mall, partying, and lots of commercial distractions, HC is NOT the place for you. If relationships matter to you, and you are a Christian, then HC may indeed be the place.
