Houghton is a great college if you are willing to be stretched. The faculty is highly qualified and they will expect high standards from you. While attending I was an average student but pursuing my Masters I found my self at the top of my class due to my training at Houghton. There is a very diverse population for a small school so your peers will not be exactly like you. If you are looking for students that always think, act and dress the same as you then Houghton is not the place. My only regret about attending is the loans I am still paying off six years later. I would and have recommended this school to my friends and family!

Houghton College's Communication Department tries hard to bring us the best possible education, and they do well, considering their budget. The administration seems to be corrupted by holier-than-thou mindsets and arbitrary decision-making.

Houghton College is an average school that works for those looking for a Christian atmosphere and somewhat challenging academic environment.

If you're looking for a school that pops off your resume, then don't go here because I assure you that NO ONE has heard of it--not even people in the nearest (1.5 hrs away) city, Buffalo and Rochester, have heard of the college although a satellite campus is located in one of those cities (not even I can remember which one).

The students at the school are super-friendly and so are most of the professors who are known to invite you over to their homes for cider and other Western NY delicacies.

The school is located in the most remote town in the western part of New York state, which means that there is a serious dearth of internship opportunities for students. Many of the students are from similar towns in PA or NY so the student body is quite homogeneous, and while you're sure to make valuable friendships, networking for career purposes is not realistic unless you plan to stay in the Christian college/evangelical ministry circuit.

Many parents send their children here because it's basically assured that their precious ones will not partake in drinking, drugging and dancing (social dancing is not allowed)while they are in Hougton, which means that there is an underlying current of bitterness among a small portion of the population. The majority of the other students are quite socially immature.

Overall, Houghton is a good school if you wish to learn how to defend one's faith and use what you have learned to serve others in the world.

From a strictly professional standpoint, it does not offer the "extras" that make your college life an "experience"-- diversity (people, thoughts & ideas), social scene and a variety of networking and internship opportunities.
