 | Quite Bright | Houghton College is a great place to go if you want to focus on academic growth and intellectual cultivation, however the rigid and antiquated student behavior codes and constant threats against individualism and personal choices flood the social context there. Even though I started attending the Wesleyan college as a traditional christian, I became repulsed by the way students were treated for having different ethical beliefs and exerting their right to make personal choices. This school will not hesitate to tarnish a student's college records because of infractions to the code of conduct. The college presents itself as a safehouse for Christian folk, but is in fact a cesspool in which the "righteous" swim among the reform students and students are supposed to adopt a one note frame of mind. | Faculty Accessibility: A+, Individual Value: F | | | |

| | Quite Bright | | Many of the instructors are typically hired from within a small group of Christian colleges, hiring mainly based on religious belief not academic achievement. This leads to a certain level of academic inbreeding, stagnant thought, and limited intellectual freedom. Religious beliefs of college often make for very biased administrative positions, for example expelling a student who had an affair with an instructor, but keeping the instructor; or preventing staff members from assuming leadership positions because they had been divorced. Security of student property is often problematic as thefts are generally not reported to the police in order to prevent the school?s insurance rates from increasing. Too much emphasis and money put on the basketball program; mediocre talent in a small college that can never hope to compete seriously regionally. Academic counseling is weak and sporadic; psychological counseling for students questionable in its professional integrity. Internship programs lack cohesion and faculty support in many cases. The born-again atmosphere is a thin disguise for an academically weak instructional pool, an insufficient library with poorly ?trained staff, and ?science? instructors more concerned with ?faith? than actual, quantifiable, scientific fact. | Starting Job: Program coordinator, Preparedness: F, Reputation: F | | |

| | Quite Bright | I had a wonderful experience at Houghton College. If you are looking for a party school, this is not your college. If you are looking to meet wonderful people and work with intelligent professors that give individual attention, then this is Houghton College. It IS a Christian College, go there expecting Christian professors and Christian values. If you go expecting something different you will have a negative experience, as you will see in some of the negative comments. Professors are well educated (my physics professor got his doctorate at Harvard) and open-minded. I loved my time at Houghton, got a great education, and now have a well paying wonderful job that I enjoy. | Education Quality: A+, Surrounding City: D | | | |
