Juilliard is a great school, but it costs a lot of money and a lot of kids have lots of loans. If you are offered a free ride to a school with a strong academic and music program take it. Juilliard has a great name and a great reputation but the truth is not everyone is going to have a performance career, which leaves a lot of people stuck. You have to be realistic. If all you can think about all the time is music and you get in, go to Juilliard If you want something more balanced, then a university program might be the right thing. Also Juilliard is going through this construction thing right now that is very inconvenient and there are never enough practice rooms for people to practice as much as they want. Carefully consider if you want to put up will all that and sacrifice everything for music

It is really competitive and the teachers know what they are talking about, but sometimes it is hard to understand what is going on. The work is piled on and you spend tons of time in the practice room next to a sorry Steinway and with only a blue velvet curtain for your friend. But it is a great program, but you really have to want it to make it work.

I am a third year music student at Juilliard. This is a great school if you're planning on following an extremely narrow route to your anticipated career goal. Juillaird's music department is great for private study; however, I wish there were not so many orchestras here. We're always changing around, and hardly have enough time to "really" get to know our musical colleagues. This is a small conservative school--with a corporate business feel. Not the school to attend if you're looking for lasting relationships (unless you're the next Yo-Yo Ma or Miles Davis). Obviously, there are many positives about Juilliard, but actually attending is risky business--if accepted, visit the school, take a few lessons, and please ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!
