I came into Mannes halfway through my undergraduate degree. ALthough it was quite different from my previous school (much more traditional and straight-edged classically oriented), I learned to love all the positive aspects. The piano faculty (i am a pianist) and theory/composition faculty are unbelievable, and the small environment allows you to get to know these people without being a number. All in all, mannes really is a nurturing environment with a great educational experience. The only down side--it does not, in any way, prepare you for the reality of trying to be a musician in new york city.

Mannes has been a great experience. The ability to cross register with The New School University has been a real plus for humanities courses.

Mannes is an amazing place. The education is first-rate and rivals that of any conservatory in the US. It is small (to its advantage) and doesn't get the full recognition it deserves. (it is not a factory like other conservatories). It prepared me for graduate school and for a career as a composer and teacher. The workload is heavy and they push you to your limit as a musician and artist. I have the highest regard for this wonderful conservatory. The only school that could rate higher than Mannes in my opinion is the Curtis Institute, which attracts the best of the best of the best in the world because they offer a free education. Interestingly, many of the faculty at Mannes teach at Curtis. The down side: the facilities are great...but, you are in NYC! And much has changed since Mannes joined the New School University. Good luck!
