I am a studio arts major here at NYU and although this school may have a great reputation and really good external resources for an artist considering the location, I ultimately view Steinhardt to be extremely overpriced. Although we pay the same amount as the rest of the students here our program is overlooked when it comes to divvying out finances. I think a lot of out tuition money goes to pointless aesthetics such as extravagant staircases. The studio facilities are awful, the Barney building is our only resource, which is an old building that has undergone some renovation, but maintenance really lacks as well as space. The classes seem limited because of the spatial problem. If your thinking about sculpture I would avoid this school. The wood foundry is fine but welding is the only metal work available. Casting is completely out of the question. The general feeling of the program is very open, the curriculum focuses on contemporary art and half of the work produced is conceptual bullshit. It's refreshing to have a school that allows you to develop your own individual style but at the same time it seems that they may lack the initial structure needed. Te critiques are pointless. Half of my teachers have no constructive criticism, and I often feel that they lack the motivational skills to help the students that are really struggling. It seems that the professors are just talented artist but poor teachers. I think the tuition here is outrageous and really just not worth it for a studio art's major. This is not a major that is going to lead to extreme wealth so if your thinking about getting into debt over this I would advise otherwise. NYU is not an art school, don't let the name distract you. I often feel like I have just been bought and in the middle of some business transaction, but for the other schools here like Stern or CAS it really could be worth it. You purchase this reputation so later you can be bought. NYU is a good school and maybe worth your money depending on the department, but I do feel like Steinhardt is a joke, do plan to transfer out. However, there are a lot of people who are really eating up this program and may be getting enough out of it. I just come from a more traditional educational background and am really tired of seeing googled images of penis's and piss in jars being passed off as good art.

I have no idea where to begin. NYU has this new thing about bringing new professors to the school from foreign countries. I currently have a prof who seems like he just came from China, and he's my Calc prof!!!! every time he's about to finsih explaining something important, he begins to laugh, and you have no idea what he's just said. Another professor just came from Cairo (Egypt) and my TA from the class is also Egyptian. You're wasting so much money on classes you don't want to take to begin with, just because they're "required" MAP courses. As for the Pre-Med program, I have no idea how it works at the school. Yeah I know I need to take sciences, but i'm not allowed to take sciences until i'm finished with a couple MAP courses. Thanks to the recession, they've made a lot of budget cuts, and I have no idea how i'll pay for the next semester since my mom is the only one paying (my dad is very sick). The people (don't even get me started) are two faced, racist jerks. Just a small anecdote. One tie I was at a lecture, and the prof was talking about how Islam spread really fast through reproduction. Then some fool in the audience raises his hand and says something to the affect of, "do you mean reproduce like the Hispanics in this country causing White americans to be outnumbered?" everyone almost fell off their chairs laughing. I took great offense to that. Not only am I hispanic, but i know for a fact that the reason there are a lot of us is because of IMMIGRATION! the professor was so shocked he had to tell the guy to repeat the question. I seriously felt like punching him. I can't even relate to the girls in my class. They're like LITTLE PARIS HILTONS RUNNING AROUND! all they do is B!&* over the smallest things, and theire voices are annoying. If you're looking for a LIBERAL school, a school where people are open minded an polite, keep searching. There is no diversity whatsoever, and the people are cold. They won't hold the door for you, they will literally go out of their wasy as to not hold the door for you by just opening the dorry wide enough to let them through. Countless are the times when I've laughed watching how they underestimated their bag's size and close the door on the bags!!! hehehe you'll also be nauseated by how many people walking around with Starbucks coffee there are. Personally, I'm transferring out of the school. I HATE NYU!!!! it gives no chance for people low on "bling" to receive and education. and te FUNNY thing IS that all they talk about in the convocation ceremony, is how it WAS a school for the POOR. PSHT YEAH RIGHT! it's survival of the richest there. people seem like they came out of an episode of Gossip girl.

Not so bright
NYU is a complete ripoff. For the money you pay, the education you receive is bullshit. And you know why the tuition is largly so high, because of bad investment NYU made with its money in the 1970's. I mean, honestly, it is a joke, i have graduated in 08, and barely taken away anything from the 4 years there. Not to mention, the teachers rarely give you the benefit of the doubt in terms of grades, and considering how much you pay per class, that is the shame. Oh wait, did i mention almost everybody there is a very liberal, especially the teachers who basically attempt to indoctrinate you with their political views. And forget about the student body, its basically a bunch of homosexual people who finally are out of their parents sight and free to act as disgusting as they please. No offense to gay people, this is just how I feel. Luckly there is a greek community, although it is small it was fun. In retrospect i would have not gone to NYU, even though i wound up meeting some great friends.
