Sort By: [Date] [Major] [Rating] English  Major Salary, Salary Trend, Satisfaction, Unemployment Quite Bright As far as the writing major is concerned, the professors genuinely care about what you are doing as a student AND as a person. I've had many of my professors from freshman year, first semester still contact me and ask how I am doing and if I need help. They really do want you to succeed and are willing to help as much as possible AS LONG AS YOU ARE WILLING TO ASK FOR IT. Don't expect to be treated as a child though or babied (except in grammar class, which you should test out of). You will have to fend for yourself. You will have to ask for extensions. You will have to be punctual. And you will have to ask if you want some extra help or just want some advice. They give a lot initially but they cannot be expected to give out every bit of advice or help you with all of your problems UNLESS you ask for it. The professors are also very flexible and understanding. The workload isn't really heavy, but your studio classes and special topics classes do have a lot of work. And it builds as the semester goes forward. Sometimes it seems pointless, but it eventually pans out that you've grown SO much as a writer. The students here are far from pompous, extremely friendly, and bright. Of course you run into a few not so nice people just like anywhere else, but for the most part, the students are nice. The campus is BEAUTIFUL, and although it is in Brooklyn, I do feel relatively safe. Sure things can happen but overall, it's a nice area of Brooklyn with lots of cute cafe's, restaurants, and shops. Not to mention it's a very quick subway ride away from Manhattan, which is an incredible resource for any major. The professors are all working in the field and very knowledgeable. The workload is heavy, especially once you get into your major. Those who say it isn't are just scraping by and aren't putting the time into it that they should. If you want an A, you have to work for it, and once it's achieved, you definitely feel it was worth it. I love Pratt and I have recommended many others to the school, all of whom also enjoy being here and learning what the professors have to teach. I will be the first to admit that the administration is not very good and it can be frustrating but it is never more then a 20 minute inconvenience I really don’t think I have spent more then an hour in the bursars office in the 3 years I’ve been here. I have a big family and Pratt took hat in consideration when they gave me a generous aide package. If you are not dedicated to the program and dedicated to your art this is not the place for you. The professors are for the most part very good but you can’t expect agree with anyone on something as subjective as art. The neighborhood is one of the safest in Brooklyn and anyone who feels uncomfortable here will probably never feel comfortable in any diverse urban environment which is not a shortcoming of the Institute (it is by no stretch of the imagination a “ghetto”). Your education is entirely dependent on what you put into it, if your not devoted enough I imagine it would be a nightmare. Lots of seeds were planted during my undergraduate years and I was given room to explore issues of identity politics, community organizing, and education, all of which helped me create a path for myself in graduate school and beyond. I currently teach foundation year art and have come to really appreciate the level of instruction I received at Pratt, as a freshman. I was a national talent search recipient and came in on the final round of full tuition scholarships. The faculty in my foundation year also selected my portfolio for the talent search. They really gave a damn and set the bar high which helped me tremendously. I was treated like an asset and they expected a return for their investment in me. I graduated with honors.
