IT, founded in 1829, is a private, technological institution.  Programs are offered through the Colleges of Applied Science and Technology, Business, Engineering, Imaging Arts and Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Science.  Its 1,300-acre campus is located five miles from downtown Rochester.

Ambitious, creative, diverse, and career-oriented students from every state and more than 95 foreign countries find a home in RIT's innovative, vibrant living/learning community.  Distinguished globally as a leader in technological and career-focused education, few universities offer RIT's variety of specialized studies.  Founded in 1829, RIT offers more than 170 undergraduate academic programs in business, engineering, engineering technology, art and design, science, mathematics, computing, information sciences, liberal arts, photography, hospitality, and many other areas.  Distinctive academic offerings include microelectronic and software engineering, imaging science, film and animation, biotechnology, physician assistant, new media, international business, telecommunications, and the programs in the School for American Crafts.  Students may choose from more than 50 different minors to develop personal and professional interests that complement their academic program.  As home of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), RIT is a leader in providing educational opportunities and access services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.  Experiential learning has been a hallmark of an RIT education since 1912.  Every academic program at RIT offers some form of experiential education opportunity which may include cooperative education, internships, study abroad, and undergraduate research.  Experiential education is designed to enrich the learning experience by providing students the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the lab and classroom to real-world problems, projects, and settings.  Students work hard, but learning is complemented with plenty of organized and spontaneous events and an emerging school spirit.  RIT is a unique blend of rigor and fun, creativity and specialization, intellect and practice that prepares alumni for long-term career success in a global society.
