 | Quite Bright | Potsdam is what you make of it- if you want a quality education, you will get one! If you want to slide by, minimally passing, then you can do that as well. Potsdam gives students every opportunity to grow professionally and individually. | Education Quality: A+, Useful Schoolwork: B- | | | |

| | Quite Bright | | The many negative comments regarding SUNY Potsdam I believe are from downstate students who find themselves in a very unfamiliar environment. They are out of their hostile, competitive, materialistic environment and are disoriented. They find themselves as outcasts among more open, friendly upstaters. Their friends and family pay them very few visits due to the distance of Potsdam from L.I. and NYC areas and the result can be very lonely for shallow, shopping-mall people. Upstaters simply do not play these stupid LI games and a downstate student can feel that they have landed on another planet where they are the cultural minority. If this same school were located closer to NYC, it would be considered at the very TOP of the SUNY system. This is a wonderful school for any self-motivated student who wants a superior education in a safe, clean stimulating environment. If you expect any university to "give" you an education, you will be horribly disappointed; you need to create that process from within yourself. Potsdam offers every opportunity to rise to whatever level you wish. If you cannot get a superior education here, then you would not be able to get it anywhere. It's all really you, you know ! | Education Quality: A, Collaboration/Competitive: B | | | |

| | Quite Bright | This college is a complete joke for many reasons. -The people in the Crane School of Music are among the worst people on the planet, I am convinced. If they are not too busy sporting their All State shirts or telling people about how great of a performer they are, these people are most likely spending their time being judgement and caddy. And that is a complete understatement. At least 80 percent of the people here are completely hypocritical and judgement, and while they present this facade of caring about your progress and success, they are busy plotting away about how to tear you down another peg. It is a really gossipy environment, and the people here do not even attempt to get to know you once they hear about you second hand, or learn about one thing you did. -The faculty is composed of a bunch of nutjobs. My studio teacher, for example, instead of giving me lessons on my instrument, would turn each of my lessons into a theraputic session about how I need to "focus" or "look at life in a different way." I am sorry, but I did not go to music school to be lectured by a lonely middle aged man, nor did I come to have my psychological issues examined. The woodwind faculty is absolutely awful and will fail you for your jury for something as little as being nervous. My one friend who is an oboist said she failed her "level" because the panel thought she seemed too nervous. Well, I am sorry, but of course she is nervous, this is an audition. -The "level" system here is completely flawed and pointless. For instrumental, the level A is the one the students pass less, which makes no sense because technically the levels should increase in difficulty as you ascend. I absolutely hate it, and it is the equivalent of the regents exams (if you are a new yorker) in high school. It is just a pointless benchmark to pass, which does not indicate your skill as a musician at all. It is based on a worthless 10 minute audition. -The town is horrible and in the middle of nowhere. No one on campus does anything accept get drunk at random parties or spend their time gossiping about people they are jealous of. -If you post your opinion on twitter, count on some nosey bitch or some passive aggressive flamer to tattle on you to someone who does not give a crap. This place is not a reflection of the real world. In the real world these people would be stepped on like tiny, insignificant ants. -The social scene is completely backward. If you were that antisocial nerdy kid in high school, Crane will accept you because you will blend right in! My antisocial and mentally retarded friend from high school was accepted here because the people felt sorry for him and his friends shared the same autistic interests that he did. So if you were well liked in high school, forget about that here! -If you are a gay male and want to go here, forget about it. The gay male population here is completely disgusting and filled with overly judgmental queens who think they are more talented than you. The only decent people are not out of the closet yet, and believe me, there are a lot of those. The only reason I even considered this craphole is because I was a double major in two instruments, which the others school I was accepted to did not let me do. Also, this complete liar from my studio (who was closeted by the way) convinced me to go there because it was sooooo great. And then when I get there he completely ignores me just like the other fake people who convinced me to go there. All that going to this dump for a year did was show me that I am better than it. I am transferring the second I get the chance. Do not go here. The only reason you should even sneeze in the direction of this school is if you want to be a classical singer. That is all. | Faculty Accessibility: A, Individual Value: F | | | |
