I am a moderately bright student and even received a scholarship to attend the art and design school which is mostly unheard of for a suny and especially if you're instate. overall I found the education great, the teachers insightful and helpful and all around easy to approach with almost anything. Although, the school as a whole, should be renamed suny poorchoice since that is what you should expect when attending. first of all, the school itself is known as one of THE most ugliest campuses in the U.S., and yes this statistic is correct, you can even check it out in the Princeton Review. The buildings which stick out as square decaying bricks on top of bricks are absolutely horrendous, even the insides of these buildings are completely unaccommodating. There is constantly construction, shutting down of buildings, fires, and always asbestos. In other words they really should tear everything down and start new. The surrounding city (white plains) is really no better. Even if you want to make a trip outside of campus you are stuck going to the mall on a weekly basis or to the movies which will get old by the 3rd to 4th week and expensive. The campus is also isolating and small, transportation is limited to the unreliable bus system or it's basically a "must" to bring your car. There is nothing designed on campus to keep you there unless you want to drink a lot of coffee and listen to elevator music at starbucks. The facilities aren't even what makes this place unattendable, it's even the people who go here, and yes I am open minded and accepting but apparently a lot of others aren't. There are too many cliques within each conservatory, too many snobbish pretentious hipsters who have no time for others if you're not dressed in the latest shabby salvation army chic wear. So yes, if you're even the slightest bit preppy like me you WILL have a hard time fitting in and get stared at plenty for not meeting the ridiculous criteria. Drugs are also everywhere on campus and the only thing these people look forward to everyday is getting f***ed up to an extreme. Basically if you want to attend a "normal" like school, Purchase is not the place for you. And I'm actually in the process of transferring. Also, the administration is very unhelpful with absolutely anything. So if you ever want a problem solved about anything, there's really no use in going to them. Maybe it might get solved but that will probably only happen months later. So if you're looking for an ordinary campus with a healthy social life and want to actually have pride for your school...stay far, far away from suny poorchoice. I came in as an undecided student, but after a faculty member suggested I look into the New Media major, I realized it was the program for me, and declared it as my major at the end of my first semester. Since then I have been working to complete requirments for my major and my general education requirements. The variety of classes I have been able to take, even as a focus on my required classes is awesome. The Professors in general make the classes enjoyable, and are dedicated to their students. One of my professors read over and gave me feedback on four drafts of my final paper; her dedication to helping her students fully understand concepts was a very positive experience. As for campus life, as with any College, you will get what you put into it. There is always something going on around campus, you just have to find it. It's easy to sit in your dorm room but there is always fun to be had and friends to be made at club meetings, events, or at the Student Center. Purchase offers lots of ways for students to get involved and find things they are interested in. I would say that Purchase students are a pretty friendly bunch. The closest city, White Plains, is okay. There is a movie theater, three malls and some other cool shops. When I want to go out though, I usually head to NYC. You can get the bus from Purchase to the White Plains Train Station and from there Grand Central is a 35 minute express ride away. My favorite part about Purchase is the diversity of students who go here. The conservatories bring some of the most talented people from all over the country to out campus (The Liberal Arts program does too, but not to the same extent). Although some people might think that students in the conservatory only hang out with others in their conservatory, that is only because their programs are intense, and they have to spend time with the same people. I'm so glad I trusted by gut and came to Purchase. If you're interested in the art & design program, please read this and take my word for it! The art & design consevatory at Purchase is fantastic. You may have heard talk about Purchase having really crappy academics. These people are most likely talking about the Liberal Arts program, which isn't fantastic from what I've heard. Purchase is mainly focused on its conservatories, which are some of the best in the country, hands down. Students in the art conservatory are very self-driven. The faculty are all artists themselves and/or have years of experience under their belts. The first year program is comprised of 4 intense studio classes: Drawing 1, Design 1 (Carol Bankerd is the Dumbledore of design), Sculpture 1, and Extended Media (if possible, get Casey Hooper. Especailly if you're interested in design or printmaking.) The work is intense, but if you're modivated enough of an art student, you'll get through with not too much trouble. There's a pretty heavy workload the first year, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was designed to weed out anyone who isn't dedicated enough. So if you don't mind spending hours upon hours working in the visual arts building, even if it means working through some weekends, this is the place for you. Also contrary to everyone says, not all the art students are pretentious and rude. Very few are. The majority of them are very friendly and helpful, especially towards first year students. Like I said, the art program is great. So if you're accepted, congratulations! As for the rest of the school... Food: Eh. Not wonderful, not bad. You'll get pretty tired of it, but there's plenty of places to order from. There's tons of places to eat in White Plains too. White Plains: Not very exciting. There's plenty of places to shop & eat in the downtown area. I wouldn't venture into many other parts of the city. I'd say the Purchase bus system is 98% reliable. Dorms: Pretty decent. Campus: Pretty much a disaster now, but hopefully will look a lot nicer once construction's done. Feel free to contact me with any other questions!
