If social life is the most important thing to you, this may not be the right school. If however you are interested in a top flight education in sciences/math/health
area you can not beat it. Academics are top notch and the
price is very reasonable especially for in state students.
Education Quality: A+, Social Life: C

Stony Brook's Computer Science program was outstanding academically. It has a great reputation in New York, so there were lots of job opportunities for me. I found there were many talented students in my classes, which raises the level of a program. So, this is a great program if your goal is to educate yourself and have a career/make money/etc.

The University has improved the look of the campus, but it still needs to work on that. It needs better architecture, especially for the dorms, and it needs to be integrated better with the surrounding communities.
Preparedness: A+, Reputation: A+

Contrary to the popular perception of large research universities, at Stony Brook I've found that most of the faculty are skilled, dedicated teachers who truly care for students and will go out of their way to help you find research opportunities and internships. The student body is diverse and interesting, and the social life is great (especially if you get involved with a student organization or club). There's always something to do and always new people to meet. Dorms are pretty crowded these days, but more people are realizing there's decent off-campus housing to be found even for those of us without cars (there are apartments within walking distance and on the train line).

Great academics, awesome people, lots of student life, and relatively affordable tuition--what more could you want?
Education Quality: A+, Individual Value: B
