As an older student I appreciate the response and caring the professors and staff provide. A crowd always loses ordinary people like me. I love the fact that at Alfred I can be noticed. But it is more than just a physical notice. What also affects a persons view in a small area is how I act. Because the perception a person has in life is often perceived because of their own thoughts and actions these will affect how they view life at Alfred. For an example I was in Rochester, NY during my middle school years. I felt like an outsider because I was one of the only Caucasian country girl in my school. But I will not blame them for not understanding me, I can only blame myself for not trying to let them get to know me better. But I have successfully integrated into the school being 36 years of age and myself. I try to share with others my thoughts and I do not isolate myself. In small communities like Alfred the citizens of the city need to take care of themselves. In the spring and the fall there is an influx of thousands of students. Many students are careless and harmful to the town. But others are caring and try to be helpful. But a question I must ask every student is, what have you done to help people want to get to know you better?

The classes are small so I can get personal assistance whenever I need to. The professors are people and they do not always instruct how students desire, but students can make suggestions and be listened to. Because the community is isolated people who are desirous to try out the campus should consider living surrounded by a state park for months on end. What a person does in that environment is planned and considered. Life will affect how you feel.A small community will remark on differences a lot quicker than a city campus environment. A person is noticed immediately and they make their own reputation by the speech, comments, and actions. I have a good reputation in the area of Alfred, and I will maintain it while on campus. I am hoping to improve it also.

I am in the process of transferring to another school. I was signed up for a bachelors degree, but switched to the associates and am going to get a bachelors somewhere else. Alfred needs to reavaluate some major components of its college community.
