Question
Syracuse is a collection of schools that functionCommunications
Syracuse is a collection of schools that function quite independently of one another. It's hard to rate the university as a whole because the various units vary widely in quality.

If you are considering a graduate degree in broadcasting, journalism, advertising, or PR, Syracuse's Newhouse School is quite literally one of the finest insitutions in the world to pursue such studies. The facilities, faculty and students (not to mention the alumni network) there are all first rate.

Along with Newhouse, the Maxwell School at Syracuse is considered to have an outstanding public administration program. It's usually ranked alongside Harvard.

Beyond those two schools, the rest of the university is really second or third tier in quality. A lot of the undergraduates are spoiled rich kids from the suburbs of the Boston-Washington coridor who didn't have the grades to get into the ivy league. As a graduate student, I was very much separated from that whole scene, but just walking around campus, one got the feeling that Syracuse had many of the trappings of a party school.Basically, my advice is that Syracuse is a school that will challenge you and open a lot of career doors...if you're in one of a handful of its programs that are among the best in the nation. Beyond that, you're probably better off to save the money and go to a good state school instead.
