The school is great and is very competitive

Nov 17 2013Engineering Department
The school is great and is very competitive. The biggest problem in regards to this school is financial aid. I feel as though they keep trying to take more and more. I discussed the issue with some of my friends and they have the same problem. The problem being that they give you a lot of financial aid to get you to choose Rochester, but year after year your financial aid from the school goes down and the tuition goes up. My family's income has recently taken a toll, and after discussing it with the school they didn't do anything about it. Also in mid-semester they decreased my financial aid and expected me to pay the result within a month. This is causing me many issues and they threaten to prevent you from attending the next semester if you don't pay it.In regards to classes, it all depends on the professor. There are great professor that will be very helpful and will gladly schedule time to meet with you individually. And there are those that aren't helpful. An instance is the professor I currently have that rarely gives out help because he is too involved in his research. Best thing to do is to find study buddies where you can help each other out.

Do NOT go to this school

Jul 25 2013Engineering Department
Do NOT go to this school. You can find the same level of education or even better at even a good state university. The University of Rochester sucks out and steals all your money and your family's money. This school is far too expensive, and students pay for more than what they are getting. This school's board has a business mindset and their priority is earning more money. Tuition will increase by at least $1000 every year and there are several "hidden fees" that you will come by in your 4 years here. Even if you look at something as simple as the dining plans, you will see that you are getting cheated. I am not saying this is a bad school. But if you are relying on loans or your family is working very hard to send you here, you may want to reconsider. One other thing -- this university prepares you well for graduate school. However, if you are trying to get job after you graduate, HALF of the graduating class finds it VERY difficult to actually find something when they receive their diplomas..

My experience at the University has been pretty

Feb 17 2013Computer Science
My experience at the University has been pretty positive. Of course the food sucks and the weather is bad (from December to March; but campus is pretty small, so getting around isn't too bad). The academics are amazing and the freedom early on feels great. The people are friendly and open minded, albeit a bit weird, but you can definitely tell that many of us were borderline Ivy rejections (aka the only "Ivy" kids we have here were accepted to Cornell, but U of R gave them more money).

The social life is...okay. Honestly though, you should come to college for an education and the social life should be a perk. That being said, there are parties every weekend or so (but you probably don't want to walk to parties in January anyway) and the school claims to be working on alternate social activities for weekend nights, other than the $2 movies at Hoyt (which are great!). You can definitely find something to do, and the school is small enough that you'll develop a close knit group pretty quickly.

Overall, U of R is a pretty good school. Don't expect perfect; you're not going to find that anywhere. Make the most of your time here, and you'll enjoy it.
