This was the biggest mistake of my life. My first semester I got sabotaged in classes where the whole class flunked out due to teacher incompetence. Then I was trapped there for four years with no way to transfer out. NOT being in a big city or even a mid size city is hell. There is basically no life whatsoever outside the college and the college has little to no life within it. People there are predominately neuvo rich long island SNOBS spoiled rich brats who got there from having money and getting overworked in high school cramming NOT from being bright. The school has a hard time getting good professors because its - 1) located in the woods 2) freezing cold there. I mean really what adult would want to live in poughkeepsie. The student work loads in some majors are insane - cog sci, bichem, most any of the sciences. While the rich kids major in drama and art history. Most of the majors there are USELESS in real life. USELESS. No architecture program. No Nursing Program. No real engineering program. The kids I knew were studying ancient greek and things like that. I will say this. Its a unique experience to be trapped in a horrific place for 4 yrs. Kinda like bonding in a gulag. Which is why the vassar network is so strong afterwards. We are all survivors. When we meet we just bitch at how horrible it was. To compensate, a lot of the kids get very violent, trash the dorms, drink a lot. anything from facing the horror of this school for dumb kids that as a smart kid you got suckered into going. Since I graduated I havent given a dime to this school. And I'm proud of that.

Vassar is a great place to discover what you want to do in life. The school makes it safe to explore classes out side of your comfort zone. Some classes outside of your major you can take P/F like Brown. My social life is well balanced (There is alway something going on, sometimes too much) with academic studies. I get a kick out of the creative, funny and talented folks I am surround by ;even though I am more of a patron than an artist! Vassar has many research and internship opportunities that you might not have at other undergraduate programs.

Vassar Drama is vastly overrated.
If all you want to do is academic theater, or never REALLY perform at a professional level, then by all means go there.

The professors have no idea what the "real world" is like and even squelch the ambitions of those students who wish to do anything else but "downtown theater" or be professors.I spent many years unlearning what I learned at this hole of a school and regret that I went there
