I am transferring out of Wake after this year, but I'll do my best to present the University in a fair light. Personally, I have found most of the student body to be pretty shallow. The large majority of students are far more interested in being socially successful (primarily through the Greek scene) than they are in growing as people. Additionally, coming from a midwestern public school I have found many of the students to be blatant elitists. Middle and lower class students stand out. It seems like there is a lot of pressure on people in the Greek Life, especially women, to conform to a lot of ridiculous standards. Most people tend to dress and talk so similarly that it is actually hard to distinguish between people you don't know very well. But there are definately small pockets of really intelligent and compassionate people at Wake.
I know the stuff above sounds pretty harsh, but almost everyone I know here would probably agree at least to some extent. In any case, Wake is not without its many good qualities. First off the campus is one of the most beautiful. The professors are knowledgable, friendly, and helpful. Outside of the fact that very few people participate in class discussion, classes are really good.
Overall, Wake has a really good reputation, some great programs (Business and Pol. Sci come to mind), great professors, and an awesome campus. But it also has a very immature student body that can be frustrating for people looking to escape the 'high school mentality'. Basically my recommendation for people considering coming to Wake is this: If you consider yourself to be a pretty progressive, mature student interested in really chaning and growing as a person in the next four years, don't come here. On the other hand, if you're looking for a good time and a degree that will help you in four years, few places would be better for you than Wake. I really wish I would have read something like this before coming here, because I whole-heartedly believe that Wake Forest is an awful fit for progressive students, but a good school for smart, not terribly serious students.
