I chose Mt. Vernon initally because I wanted a small Christian college with good facilities and an appealing campus. I spent my freshman year there and then transfered to The University of Akron (currently at the Wayne branch.) There were definitely some good things about the school, but not enough to make me stay.
Classes: Well, I considered myself pretty average, but I felt smart, that's for sure. I got placed in a few of the more "advanced" classes, didn't do much work and still maintained about a 3.7 overall. I was not challenged by the coursework. Plus, you are required to take some Christian classes, which aren't going to transfer very well for me.
Faculty: I really enjoyed the professors for the most part. They were respectful and friendly. A few that stuck out- Cochran, I had him for Western Civ II and although the class is somewhat challenging, he was really enjoyable; Yerxa, I had him for management, pretty much the nicest guy ever and I got an easy A; Fox, I had her for nutrition and it was stupid, definitely don't recommend her, she seemed unprepared for class half the time, had no idea what she was doing and was not very helpful outside of class.
Students: Don't get me wrong, I definitely made some amazing friends, but alot of the students seem friendly at first but fairly stuck-up when you get to know them. You just gotta find the right people to hang out with. If you're a conservative nazarene you'll probably be just fine. I am catholic and most people found that weird and didn't really think very highly of me because of it.
Other: Well, there is chapel 3 times a week, required- or you get fined. You're not allowed to wear shorts in class, the chapel, or the cafeteria. There is pretty much nothing to do. Basketball games are also fun though. The campus is nice looking, the library is nice too. You'll probably end up knowing about everyone is your class.
I guess I just felt like I was in a little Christian bubble. It felt a little like high school to me and I wanted to actually experience some diversity and different views, not get everything taught to me from a Christian perspective. Also, there is a nice bike trail really close to the college, so that's a lot of fun to ride on, I brought my bike to school. It's not like everything about the college is awful, I didn't have the best experience, but it's still a nice place. I've thought about going back, but it's expensive and I'm looking forward to going up to Akron next year. One other thing, you have to live in a dorm your freshmen year, but after that a lot of people live in the apartments on campus, which are pretty nice. Well, I guess that's about it.

Super Brilliant
I attended Mount Vernon as a post secondary student. I earned a 32 on the ACT and had a 4.0 in high school, so I consider myself fairly intelligent. I had high aspirations for my tenure at Mount Vernon and was grossly unimpressed. The best I can say about the school is that the faculty is usually very interested in helping their students (while not always capable) and the grounds are maintained well. Its not the most beautiful campus and hardly has the student resources other $25,000+ universities have.

The students were given a nickname by the students at surrounding colleges, namely, "nazholes". This is because they have the precepts of being nice and friendly, but will have nothing to do with a person who is not a republican protestant (and sometimes even a Nazarene). They are very close minded and usually only interested in superficial qualities of appearance.

Academically, the school is lacking substantially. I don't feel like I learned anything at the school, and if the state wouldn't have paid for my tuition, I would have felt like I wasted my money. If you want to learn something, go somewhere else.

Basically, if the school was cheaper (like in the financial realms of a community college), I could recommend it. I am now a Junior at the University of Akron and attended their branch in Wayne county. Even Wayne, Akron's "community college" (which is frequently made fun of) was millions of times better than Mount Vernon. For $27,000 dollars, you could attend schools much better, like Case Western Reserve, Ohio State, and even out of state schools.

If you are thinking of going to Mount Vernon for religious reasons, please reconsider. Go to Cederville or Indiana Wesleyan. I had a theology professor who would interject f&^% whenever he felt like the class was not paying attention to him to rein them back in. The infallibility of the scriptures is disputed among the professors. Some professors go so far as to say the Old Testament is irrelevant.

In short - AVOID MOUNT VERNON

Bright
If you are looking for a college that will provide an extremely hands on Criminal Justice program- here you go. Professor Pickenpaugh has been in the C.J. field for over 25 years. You can't go anywhere in the C.J. field in the state of Ohio without meeting someone who knows Prof. Pickenpaugh. You will not regret choosing the MVNU C.J. major... Now the school as a whole- sucks. It's tiny and they FORCE FEED religion down everyone's throats. My advice- live off campus! And be warned- there's NOTHING and I mean NOTHING to do in Mount Vernon. As soon as I finished school, I moved to Austin, Tx. It's so nice to be out of the corn field. But for a good C.J. experience, you can't go wrong!

Quite Bright
My time at MVNU was a wonderful experience and something I will cherish forever. I wish I knew then what I know now and would have taken even more advantage of the opportunities available to me while in school.
