Small town, small university... many of the buildings are rundown, but instead of fixing up existing buildings, they spend millions on fancy new stuff. Mean while, the old stuff sits there and continues to rot. The college thinks very highly of itself. The library is the best thing about the entire college.

Quite Bright
As we sat around the dinner table aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence, around November 1990 time-frame, a subordinate of mine said that his uncle had graduated from a "dingy" college in southwest Oklahoma called SOSU. His uncle made it to the rank of admiral - four stars - in the US Navy, he subsequently added. I then told him and the rest of the group that I had risen to the position of Chief Engineer at one of AlliedSignal's divisions only seven years after I had graduated from the same "dingy" college.

If given an opportunity to attend a better college, I'd have probably taken it. Nonetheless, SOSU had given me a great education, a good starting point, and it had also prepared me for a remarkable career and life. Its faculty consists of the most dedicated people and its environment is most suitable for those who come to college to learn, not partying. Just look at what Dr. and Mrs. Letts have achieved while there besides teaching? One is a widely acclaimed author and the other is a noted actor.

Look for Dr. Jim Harmon (Electronics) or Mr. John Carrington (Aviation) and ask them about those who came, studied, and left thirty years ago.

On the whole my experience at SOSU has been positive. I believe that the only problems that exist at SOSU concern parking problems and the continued rise in tuition costs. There is a problem with class scheduling. Less classes are being offered and the time schedules suck. The farther you get into your degree the less class times are offered. I also believe that SOSU has not fully utilized internet classes much. The population of students attending SOSU has increased while the number of professors and staff has stayed the same; this I believe has been the main factor with reducing the availability of classes each semester. There has also been a lot of construction and improvements to the campus, but it has come with a cost to student parking and being able to get around campus and to your classes quickly. I also believe that the majority of the budget has been directed too much to campus improvements and encouraging an increase in student population, while forgetting to hire more professors and staff to keep up with everything.
