The school has come down very hard on the social life on campus. It has increased security and yet on-campus incidents have seemed to increase, security is meant to protect students from themselves. Professors tend to be self-absorbed and good proffesors have left in recent years. Overall the college is on a downward spiral brought on by the over-zealous Jeff McKay and others who institute college rules that have decreased retention rates dramatically. Who better to trust than the droves of students who are leaving the college?

I think that Linfield is a good school overall. The way the course work is you can work as hard and learn as much as you want or you can slack and get by. There are lots of opportunities that if you are truly interested in that the faculty can help you attain. You just can't be afraid to ask.

In my personal opinion College goes by way to fast so I would recommend going towards the five year plan. Which at Linfield is not very affordable for the average student. So if you decide you want to do the 5 five year plan then I would recommend going to a state school.

Linfield is small and there definately is an air of high school-ness permeating the attitudes of students and professors a like. It reminded me more of a college preparatory school than an actual academic institution pursuing serious intellectual pursuits.

Also, the greek system is well developed and could easily be a wonderful addition to the campus. I was a greek and loved it, but the school targets the greek system for all things bad on campus because they lack the hootzpah to examine and improve on what the real issues are.

It definately has a suburban middle class value system, fairly conservative, a few rebels, and most who really don't care so long as they continue in their little bubble of white bred, white collar, exposure.

Overall, I feel that Linfield offers a pretty solid education in a very helpful, approachable way. A good example of this is the Inquiry seminar taken Freshman year-put in normal terms, it is a Freshman writing course, but what makes it different is that the IQS is taught on a thought-provoking subject that is not easy to approach. It stretches your brain and allows this do happen in a very friendly environment.
The Professors in my department (Sociology) are extremely helpful, approachable and available. The classes are challenging but I sometimes feel like I have gotten grades on work that are way better than they should have been.
The campus is beautiful and well maintained, but McMinnville is a pretty low-key place with not a lot to do in the evenings. This means that the most fun students on campus can come up with is drinking. If you don't drink, I would seriously re-consider coming to Linfield. Don't get me wrong, there are groups that don't drink on campus, but they are few and far between and the closest cultural escape (Portland) is only accessible if you have your own car.
I am transferring at the end of this year, but it isn't because Linfield is terrible. I am completely changing my path and, unfortunately, a Liberal Arts college cannot accomidate my needs.
