Willamette provided a solid academic experience. The professors were probably the highlight of my education because they were very supportive, but also challenged me to think critically and analytically. The benefits to being part of a small school, are small courses. However, this can restrict one's social life. The city, as some others mentioned, is not an ideal college town, though being the capitol, there are some good internship opportunities for the politically inclined.

Willamette may not be as famous as other schools, but many my peers are pursuing their graduate education at some of the most prestigious institutions. I also knew several physics students who transferred to UW, USC and Columbia to finish their engineering degrees since Willamette a type of consortium agreement with these schools.

I will also say that Willamette is a progressive school. If you are interested in a career in public service, this a great place to be. Students here are involved, on campus and in the Salem community. Many start community service projects that benefit environmental and education causes.

Finally, I must note that Willamette gives generous financial aid. It is both need-based and merit-based. There will be many opportunities during your college years to apply for more scholarships. The office of academic grants and awards is very helpful when you are applying for national fellowships. At the time I was there however, there career services was not quite ad helpful, though I think they have taken measures since to help alumni network.

I chose this school because of the smaller classroom size, I was afraid I would find myself lost and helpless at a large institution. I have found the faculty very accessible, and always willing to give up time to answer questions. There are multiple resources available for aid in any subject a student may need. Downtown Salem is fun to explore during the day, and the bus and train stations are near by if you desire to travel more than walking distance. The students here are very supportive of each other and good at collaborating, there is not much competition placed on grades. There are lots of fun activities to do on campus, you just have to be on the lookout to get involved. I haven't met anybody who is truly unhappy here :)

Its a great school if you are here to learn. If you want to be in college for the experience (social atmosphere, clubs, parties, nights out) it isnt the place for you. Most of our clubs are focused on environmental/peacekeeping and physical activities, not so much just "fun"
