I am a freshman here at bloomsburg and my college experience has not been what I had hoped. I highly recommend spending the night on a visit before making the decision to come here. I am from a city in Nj and I guess the change was too dramatic for me. There is nothing wrong with this university when it comes to the faculty, athletics, courses, the people, and administration. BUT!! you must be aware you are putting yourself out in the middle of NO WHERE....There is nothing to do....Yea there are alot of parties, drinking, etc. That is all fun...you will mostly spend ur time at night walking fromm frat house to frat house looking for a fun experience that does'nt exist. This college is a TYPICAL college....that is fine... some people want that...but you can get all that bloomsburg has to offer at almost any liberal arts institution. What I'm trying to say is there is nothing special about this college. The surrounding area really does not provide much opportunity. In a place like this it is very imporatant to make friends because that is all you will have out here because believe me there is nothing else....theres a walwart not to far...umm and a few restaurants...thats about it. If you are a pennsylvania who is used to this life style...then this college with probably be a positive experience for you because it has a good reputation, its affordable, and is made up of mostly good people. BUT...if you are from a city, not close to home, not a social butterfly, not going in knowing anybody, and not sure if its for you. Don't close your eyes and jump...listen to your gut and don't go here...you will hate it here. If you are not 200% sure you love the boondox....agian..do not go here...

Bloomsburg is a typical PA state school, lots of middle income students from PA and NJ, convening for four years of fun and academics (booze and books) in a VERY rural setting.

The sports programs are fairly strong for a predominatly Div II school (wrestling and field hockey are Div. I). I had always wished students cared more about the "big" college sports like football, but it seems like it takes somewhat of a backseat to the student body...even though we were in the national championship a year I was in school. Extra-curricular activities are average at best, but did offer some great trips like to NYC (which is about 2 1/2 hrs away) and the beaches of NJ. The strongest aspect of the school while I was enrolled was the concert programs. We had Dave Matthews come (twice), Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, The Fugees, George Carlin and some others. Not even the nearest big cities can claim that this happened to them.

If you've lived in a city environment your entire life, I would suggest giving Bloomsburg a chance. It would be like night and day for you, as the campus is gourgeous and enveloped in a very "green" atmosphere. The surrounding town however leaves a lot to be desired, as most of the locals are close-minded and set in their ways. Most don't understand the impact the University has on the town. The pop. of the town is normally 10,000, but the school adds another 8,000 people practically doubling the population of the area. There are big "town-gown" issues here, but probably no more than any other rural area that boasts a college.

The academics for the price are a GREAT value...as every single professor I had throughout my four years did have their Doctorate. I was never taught by a "TA", and most professors are tenured and have been at the school awhile, caring for their students and their own work.

If you're looking for a rural, out of the way but strong academic and social environment this is the school for you.

I don't recommend this school for a degree in Psychology if you are not interested in the more behavioral/experimental aspect of the major. The professors are only interested in those students who excel in statistics, methodology and experimentation and especially so if you're looking to go to an expensive, well-known graduate school. Psychology is a popular major now and available at almost every college and university and I highly recommend taking advantage of another school's program. I have taken psychology classes and have several friends from high school majoring in psychology at Penn State and the program is much more enjoyable and productive.

Bloom U has a very strong psychology department (my area) and as far as other areas are concerned I do not know. I love my department, and the faculty there practically all know me by name, and they are all very helpful. Occasionally they get wrapped up into their own research and can be a little unappraochable (they are all very brilliant), but for the most part offer a great education. Of course there are profs here and there that I personally do not like, but you cannot be expected to like everyone! Overall, as far as my department is concerned they are great.
