I love BMC sometimes, other times I REALLY wish I had gone to a normal school (with guys) that had social activities. First, let me tell you how I picked the school. I applied to about 15 different schools: Colgate, Vanderbilt, etc, and applied to Bryn Mawr online. Nobody where I am from had ever heard of it, but it sounded like a cool name, and after all Katherine Hepburn had graduated from it! My GPA in high school was higher than a 4.0, I was in tons and tons of activities, but my ACT score wasn't high. However, I had my two favorite teachers (they taught classes that I was the top student, so I felt confident) write letters, and my essay was on my love of art history (a subject for which BMC is famous). My advice would be to take AP English and AP Econ, those classes epitomize the level that Bryn Mawr teaches. Classes are SO small, I thought that would be good- but I ended up so terrified in some classes due to the eight people around me! Small class size is great in classes you love, but awful in hate. Bryn Mawr's campus is gorgeous, Hogwart-esque. My friends who visited were absolutely astounded, it seriously looks like a castle. Not all is perfect. I found that about 1/3 of the girls are normal, 1/3 act normal but are very strange, and 1/3 are completely insane. everyone is a genius, all are A type personalities: very focused, driven, studious. scattered in this mix are girls that should have gone to Villanova (the total opposite of BMC) and stick out like a sore thumb. Note: if you are very social, obsessed with clothes, tanning, makeup, being around hot guys...YOU WILL WANT TO KILL YOURSELF! Although Haverford College is a five minute bus ride away, the school is worthless when it comes to friendly guys looking for more than a hook-up. The typical Haverboy (get used to putting "haver" before everything) is quiet, short, afraid of women, snotty, rich (but hides it), only wants to see his havergirls. Beware of the lacrosse team. Otherwise, Haverford is a GREAT school for classes, I took a class or two at HC each semester (it is required to preserve sanity) and I adored my teachers. They are actually better than the Bryn Mawr profs. As for Swarthmore College, I do not recommend taking a class there. Of my ten friends, ten HATED their class, and had awful grades that wrecked their GPAs. The boys are much nicer, more normal, better dressed, although there seems to be more snotty guys. I highly recommend going to Swarthmore parties on the weekend, it is a welcome break from Haverparties and Swatties love BMC girls. Although I really love BRyn Mawr, it is of upmost importance TO GET AWAY from the school...there are so many weird people (capes included) that one feels they live amongst freaks at times. Breaks from the campus make one realize how special and unique BMC girls are though...by working at campus during the week, and playing at either Penn, Swat, or Haverford you really develop this work/home attitude. It is so great to come back from a loud party at Swat and come back to a SILENT dorm sans smoke or music. Sometimes I really really really want to transfer to a regular school with activities (non-existant at BMC), boys, normal people without egos...but I come back from X-Mas break and I know that I just couldn't bear going anywhere else.

There is a high transfer rate, mostly because some people really miss boys (especially a long distance boyfriend) or were not prepared to have so few parties. Most parties occur at Haverford which is just a convienent busride away, but the few I have gone to there are pretty lame--mostly people drinking beer and standing around in circles talking, which is not conducive to meeting people. At least the few parties we have at Bryn Mawr, we generally do it right.

But really parties are not that important, or at least if they are to you then you probably shouldn't apply to Bryn Mawr. If you are perfectly fine with instead seeing a concert or performance, or watching a movie with dormmates, or even getting drunk playing "Never Have I Ever" with friends on the weekends, then you will be perfectly happy. For me there always seem to be plenty of things to do and I'm pretty happy with my social life. Bryn Mawr has some really good people.

Bryn Mawr has a really great atmosphere; Freshman especially are made very welcome. There is very little stealing of things other than laundry detergent, and most people are very friendly, honest, and caring. How could your social life be bad with people like that around?

I came to Bryn Mawr as a person who devalued their own opinion, and as a person overly concerned with how others would feel if my opinion differed from theirs. I rarely had a voice. At Bryn Mawr, there were only 5 people in my major and I quickly found my much needed voice. I was an athlete, a scholar, and a part of an amazing community. I was spoiled by the experience. I have not met such incredible people together in one place since, and I've found graduate school standards and expectations ridicuously easy in comparison. At Bryn Mawr, my opportunities were only limited by time. I was always in charge and I was quite happy.
I frequently hear people commenting that there is no reason for a womens' college now; I am far from silent. In my own experience, there is so much fuel for arguing the opposite and winning that debate. I went to Bryn Mawr... I had four years of intense study, relentless questioning, with peers who wanted the same. The environment was one of self-reflection and self-competition which is far from the one I see around me. However, it is much easier to deal with the real world when you have an ideal to strive towards. I only have to look around me now and see other women who have not had my experience. They are too worried about what everyone thinks. Perhaps I would be the same had gone to a small coed college. I doubt it.

If you are a conservative and politically active student, this school is a TOUGH place to exist and voice opinions. Most students are not particularly friendly people although you will probably find several that you could trust your life to. The academics are overwhelmingly difficult - it's not "are you done your homework", it's "how much homework could you get done". There is NO grade inflation; the average GPA is kept at a 2.7. If you want anything above a 3.0 be prepared to work your ASS off.
