Dickinson is a place where the academics are good, but most kids don't take advantage of them the way they should, so faculty becomes annoyed at the students and doesn't open up to them. This is because most of the students at Dickinson are there because they have money (lots of it), a history of family members having attended Dickinson, or because they look good for the college (minorities). Rarely is a student admitted on the sole basis of their intelligence/aptitude. Most of the students I have met at this school are heavy drinkers, should be attending a state school, and are immature and irresponsible people in general (but still get away with everything because a lot of the administration are Dickinson alums). Greek life is very present on this campus, so if you love to drink and go to bars and hit on girls that all look/act the same (North Face jackets, Ugg boots and black leggings, anyone?) then this is the place for you. If you're looking to make lifelong friends who have an ounce of intellectualism in them and are into activities other than frat/sorority stuff, then go somewhere else. The classes here are good, but I think many of the professors that have been there for a while are wise to how immature students are and have distanced themselves from the students.

Dickinson College often is referred to as Dickinson High School, students are often caught up in the drama that involves other students from the weekends or nights out at the bars. Speaking of, bars & Walmart are about the only things that exist in Carlise. The towns people tend to be mean spirited towards students.

As for classes, picking the right professor is essential in making sure you enjoy & learn from the class. Just signing up for any class without researching the professor can get you in a lot of trouble, getting a professor who has no idea what they're doing or how to successfully teach the material. If you're not someone for drama & can't put up with politics of dealing with people, I would highly recommend you stay away from Dickinson. If you can put up with those two things though, there is a great deal to gain from your education at Dickinson.

Like another poster, I am surprised at the extent to which comments on Dickinson are bad. If you are a prospective student reading this, make sure you talk to real Dickinson kids about it. I would estimate that 80% of students are really happy to be there. The school is expensive. Very expensive. This is the biggest drawback. However, I feel as though the money is at least mostly being used on you- you can take out vans with gas credit cards and drive them anywhere you want, go abroad and see the world, interact with some pretty intelligent faculty, host a concert or movie night with a school grant, etc. I haven't always felt great about the school, but now as an incoming senior I can really say that it's been an awesome experience. The best part is that since it's (relatively) hard to get in, the students you meet there are universally intelligent, not hit or miss like you get at many schools.
