 | Quite Bright | | I'm a graphic design student. If you take what professors say and you study the text and even do some occasional self study you'll definitely learn. The staff does a good job of teaching design principles, typography and type and image composition. My one major critique of the program is its focus on print media. Yes there is still a print design market out there, but the industry really calls for good web skills. These days information is consumed mainly through digital means. That's not to say that the solid design principles aquired here aren't going to transfer over into these markets. They will, just not one to one. As I'm writing this the concentration has just shifted its name over to Design & Digital Media. Hopefully this shift in name also includes an expanded curriculum that encompasses more digital media than previously offered. If you're interested in print design, this school would be a decent choice for you. But if new media design is where you see your future, I would recommend finding a school that embraces the more recent trends in information and communication.Altogether, the program is a solid one, it's just that it may not be training students in the areas where the industry is expanding. I'd hate for the program to become outdated, but if the curriculum is not revised soon graduating students will be stuck - unequipped for what the market demands. | Faculty Accessibility: A, Surrounding City: C- | | | |

| | Bright | | Messiah is a great school academically. Great fine arts department, great science department, great humanities. The profs are great, always willing to help, some even open their homes to the students. Great administration, very helpful and friendly. Classes are challenging, but most of them are workable. Unfortunately, when reviewing a college, you need to evaluate the people - not just the academics. Most of the girls at Messiah are pretty nice. But that's about it. If you're not the average christian pop, Taylor Swift loving, North Face wearing girl, you're going to have to look a lot harder to find your group of friends. And most of the guys are nice... but again, if you're not on a sports team or play an instrument of some sort, it may be harder to find your niche. I found the students to be very close minded. In one of my classes we watched a movie that had a couple of lesbian scenes which were necessary to understanding the characters and the plot. Yes, Christianity sees homosexuality as a sin, but that doesn't mean that when you see it, you go "Ewwww, ewwww that's sooooo NASTY!! Gross," and stop yourself from enjoying the rest of the movie. Grow up. There is also not much to do. There are some clubs and there's concerts on Wednesdays, a Coffeehouse once a month. But other than that, there's no other "fun" things to do... Unless you think going to alternate chapels are fun. Weekends can be pretty dull. And the surrounding city, Harrisburg, doesn't have that much to offer, plus it's kind of far away. The most people do off campus is go to Walmart and eat at Panera. I understand that at a Christian college, there are going to be some rules. You need 24 chapels a semester, no drinking, smoking... whatever. It's fine. But to me, visiting hours feel very limiting. I feel like whenever I hang out with a guy in a dorm room, that I'm 12 again and my mom has told me to keep the lights on and the door open. Really? We're adults now and I think that the college should treat us like we are.I'm transferring after this semester. It's just not for me, but hey, maybe Messiah's the perfect fit for you. These are just my thoughts. | Campus Aesthetics: A+, Social Life: D- | | | |

I am a recent graduate of Messiah, and I feel that I received a very high-quality education there. As with any educational experience, what you ultimately get out of it will correspond with what you put in. There is no question that Messiah College is solidly Christian. This does not mean, however, that the classes you will take there will not challenge your faith, or that you won't encounter many ideas and belief systems that are unfamiliar to you. I believe this is a strength of the school - it won't allow you to quietly coast through your four years there without truly examining your faith. Even if you don't change your mind about anything throughout your education there, at least you will be better able to defend your beliefs and know how to engage with people whose ideas are different than your own. Though the faculty are all Christian, they represent a broad spectrum of religious traditions and political convictions. It is the same with the student body. Be aware - the rules are definitely stricter than what you would find at a secular college (no drinking, no smoking, chapel requirements, etc). But Messiah does provide a large range of excellent social events - concerts, movies, lectures, clubs and activities - so people keep themselves pretty entertained even though there aren't crazy parties, and there isn't much to do in the surrounding area. Among the students there is definitely some underground drinking that happens among the upperclassmen, but this is easy to avoid unless you go looking for it, and it is rare to find any drinking in the dorms. As far as academics are concerned, I felt the quality of the classes and professors overall was excellent. I did enounter a couple professors who weren't very effective in their teaching methods, but on the whole I was very satisfied with the challenging and stimulating coursework, especially in the Humanities School. I graduated very prepared to enter the professional world. In addition, they also have an EXCELLENT study-abroad program. They make it very easy for students to spend a month, semester or year abroad both finance-wise and academically, and they have programs in a large number of countries. In my time there I was able to go on a month-long trip to Mexico and I also spent a semester in Spain. I had friends who went to Italy, Nepal, New Zealand, Lithuania, the UK, France, Uganda, Equador, Mozambique, China, and more. My main complaints with Messiah are: 1) the cost - very expensive unless you receive a large scholarship, and 2) the campus is kind of insular - you will become very familiar with the term "the Messiah Bubble" if you go here. There is a particular atmosphere and culture at the college, and after a couple years it can become tiresome - hence my appreciation of the study-abroad experience!Messiah is not your average Christian college, but if you want a challenging academic program and great social experience, you can find it there. | Education Quality: A, Surrounding City: C | | | |
