I have grown to like Muhlenberg College but I still have good and bad things to say it. I came from a diverse working class town and coming to Muhlenberg was a social shock and took a lot of adjusting. While, this school prides itself on being such a friendly and welcoming school, my experience has been a little different. First, it is not diverse and while people are not racist they are very close minded and have no experience with 'different'(anyone not rich and white). The majority of people here do no accept anyone who diverges from the norm. It is very much a 'marshmallow land( kids are very sheltered) and my experience being from a working class town( the town I grew up was 50%white,50%black,hispanic,asian,had a few gang problems, and many of the kids were on reduced or free lunch plans) caused people to view me as on outsider or 'strange'. Its stereotype on being a friendly school stems from people only being nice to people that are similar to them in demographic and race. The outside city is alright( fun things to do if your looking for more of a diverse experience) but the school looks down and categorizes the town as dangerous and gross. On the brighter side, college is about getting an education and the school has opened my eyes to learning. The psychology and women's studies departments are amazing and very accessible. The classes are small and comfortable and the work is interesting but challenging. That being said, if you are not happy at school socially it is very hard to get through the week of school work. I am very independent and have found a great group of friends( that are more than just party friends) but if you are not rich, white, and if you have come from any sort of rough background i suggest looking at a different school, unless you are willing to be only 'different' one in your group of friends. My adjustment into a more upper class setting has not been easy and sometimes i can be very critical of people's close minded notions, but i have learned to appreciate the school for its great opportunities( study abroad, internships, research). The nightlife is not your typical 'four floor house party with kegs lining the walls' but I enjoy going to the bars and the small house parties with my friends. If you do come to this school and you feel a little like an outsider, don't change who you are and don't be afraid to change your group of friends. you'll find a group of people who love and accept you and its good for the school to see some difference on campus.

It's difficult to decode whether or not I like this school. The kosher cookies are delicious, the facilities are up to par and then some, my dorm is massive (huge), and the faculty is usually more than willing to help out when prompted to do so. It should be good, but then again?it really isn?t. Here's the thing: Muhlenberg is advertised as this college that fosters and accepts diversity, creating a student body that is friendly and understanding.

That being said, I have never felt so alone and uncomfortable in my life. Maybe it's because I'm not a theatre major- sometimes it seems as though 90% of the students here are. Maybe it is because I'm not part of the religious majority-there is so much emphasis placed on being religious [Jewish] here that it can be a little overwhelming/intimidating. But what bothers me the most about this place is how fake and devoid of depth the kids here really are. I've never been so afraid to speak out because, despite the description given during tours, the students here aren?t accepting of diversity of thought. In fact, they are more close-minded than most. The Mules resemble scared high-schoolers in both appearance and personality, and they can only be described as awkward socially. They are ostensibly friendly, but that doesn?t discount the blanket of awkwardness and tacit rage that is flopped over the entire campus. The unspoken arrogance (or spoken- I had a girl tell me that she used to be the one who set the curve in all her high school classes...she looks like a squirrel) only grants seemingly passive debate over who took the most AP classes in high school or who spent the most hours studying . Honestly. I could care less, and frankly, it makes me want to take a pencil, gouge out my eye and then eat it.

I expected to grow as person upon coming to college, but this place is more constraining than high school; I have never felt so confined and I have to work to keep myself from losing stamina. Add this to the fact that leaving campus isn?t smart, not only because Allentown is boring but also dangerous (yes, we had three armed robberies on and nearby campus in one night). I?ve been considering transferring to another college next year just so I can finally get out of this high school lifestyle and feel like an independent adult

I spent one year at Muhlenberg way back in '87. I transferred because no matter how hard I worked, the teachers bombed us w/ horrible grades (I had a 2.7 GPA and that put me in the top 20% of the class!). Most teachers didn't really seem to care at all, except for Prof Rosenwasser (English), who was excellent. Coursework was very challenging. I usually spent 5-6 per night studying. Overall, most of the students were nice and approachable and friendly. I had fun hanging at the frats & room parties. Vivid memories of those few months. Allentown was interesting to explore on foot, wch I did a few times. Sports were fun (I was on the tennis team but got summarily cut from the soccer team at tryouts -- I was deemed "too small" [ridiculous considering I'd played since age 6]). Whatever. Had lots of fun, met some good peeople, but academically it was murder. Good luck!
