Ranked a Best Value U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s
Best Colleges 2005”, again named Wilson College as a “Best
Value” College among Comprehensive Colleges in the northern United States.
Wilson is also ranked in the “Top Tier” of
Comprehensive Colleges and continues to be one of the top
five colleges in its region in the category of “highest
proportion of classes under 20 students”. The College offers
rigorous and timely courses of study, grounded in the liberal
arts and sciences, engaging students in intercultural and environmental studies,
and a wide range of majors in promising professional fields.
Wilson’s other distinguishing features are: • the Wilson Honor Principle
unites and guides the community, creating a personalized, value-based learning
environment that fosters personal, intellectual, spiritual and professional growth;
• opportunities for academic achievement and recognition through programs such
as Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s premier honor society, offered
by only 262 colleges nationwide.
• eight varsity
athletic teams—basketball, field hockey, hunt seat equitation, gymnastics, soccer, softball,
tennis and volleyball—that compete in Division III of the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA);
• innovative and award-winning programs,
such as the Women with Children Program, which allows single
mothers to pursue their education while living on campus with their children, and, which serves as a model for other
colleges worldwide.
Wilson’s 300-acre campus of gracious lawns, rolling
hills, several waterways and handsome Victorian architecture has been designated
a National Historic District in Chambersburg, one of many historic
towns located in south-central Pennsylvania. Wilson’s beautiful and carefully restored
facilities include well-equipped classrooms, libraries, laboratories and residence halls; the
Penn Hall Equestrian Center; The Helen M. Beach '24 Veterinary
Medical Center; and the 100-acre Fulton Center for Sustainable Living
that provides organic foods for the dining hall and the
community. Students benefit from a $4.5 million renovation to
the Lenfest Commons, a state-of-the-art student center that forms the
hub for community conversation, dining, recreation, fitness and campus activities,
and the newly dedicated Hankey Center, which houses the Wilson
archives, the Hunnicutt Classics Gallery and a future center for
research on the education of women and girls. Wilson
College has been selected as a recipient of the 2003
PA Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence for its Interpretive Trail
and Environmental Education Program.
There
is a strong sense of community at Wilson—with a student-to-faculty
ratio of 12 to 1 and an average class size
of 13. Highly qualified and dedicated faculty who’ve graduated from
some of the finest universities, work side by side with
Wilson students in independent study, seminars, laboratories and field research.
Wilson's students, who come from 21 states and 12
countries, can participate in a variety of campus activities. From
the student-run newspaper to the international club to the modern
dance ensemble to the student government association—students can expand their
education beyond the classroom by taking advantage of the many
leadership and community service opportunities provided by these organizations. Wilson
inaugurated its 18th president, Lorna Duphiney Edmundson, on October 6,
2001. Under her leadership a five year strategic plan for
the college, Enduring Mission: Expanding Vision, outlines key strategic goals that will guide the college through 2007. The College’s
covenant with the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. is a guiding principle
on a campus which welcomes students of all faiths and
supports the spiritual development of each member of the Wilson
community.
Wilson is not only committed to providing higher education
to women, it is also dedicated to making education affordable.
Ninety percent of the college's students receive some form of financial aid. Scholarships are available to qualified students.
