BJU greatly helped in the areas of discipline, professionalism, and character. More and more professional businesses and other fields are looking for good, upstanding young people coming from college. Many of them are getting disgusted with the lazy, grungy people coming from secular universities. This is not to say that there aren't good kids coming from these secular universities, I know because I competed against them for jobs. However, if you truly want to have a disciplined work ethic, BJU is a great start. You will be hard pressed to get a better education elsewhere. However, if you are able to do this on your own or through a reputable school then by all means do so. BJU is not for everyone, don't force yourself or you will be miserable. It is a christian school that caters to conservative christians and will only force its will on those who choose to attend. Those who negatively review BJU and there time there need to remember that attending school at a certain place is a choice. Many may say they were forced to attend this "horrible, restrictive school", well then don't be a coward critic and leave those that force you so you can attend where you desire. I chose BJU and would have only regretted going there if I had wanted to choose to go to a different school and didn't go there. I have done an immense job of rambling, however I hope that this review has been helpful. Remember, not all graduates of this school are closed minded bigots that are racist. That is a preconceived idea by those who want tolerance but refuse to show tolerance.

It's one of those schools I had visited when I was ten and thought "Alright, I'm ready to go . . . goodbye world." To be honest, there was a little pressure from family and church members. But then again, God does that sometimes. If I had been allowed to have everything my own way I would probably be in a very fat coffin right now. Anyway, I must say I was very surprised at how much the university had changed since I had visited in the early nineties. Yes, there were still some poofy haired ugly dressed frump girls and some equally strange male characters (God bless them, cuz I just can't.), but the overall student body seemed to be noticeably more human than what I remembered from my visit in the early nineties. The rules . . . heaven bless them . . . all of 'em . . . are a bit much, I must say. Exhaustive, you might add. But ya know, ten years from now I'm not going to look back and say "Gee, I wish they hadn't been so strict!" Really, there were a lot less rules than I was expecting. I come from a rather relaxed family that just doesn't bother with a lot of the household standards that most other Christian families enforce with an iron fist. So why have I not been kicked out yet? I've never had to be on any kind of probation or experience any of the horrible disciplinary actions you hear about all the time. I've learned to respect even the respectable. I've learned to follow the rules even if I don't agree with them. I've learned that sometimes you can't have things your own way. I've learned that God can use even the ugliest, dimwitted, church fanatic. I've learned that people hate you when they hate your God. I've learned to stop complaining about the faults of the people and rules around me today, and start looking for ways that those flaws can make me a better person tomorrow. Sure, there are some rotten eggs there. But God can use rotten eggs ya know! Before I packed my things and traveled 3,000 miles to a school known in my town only as "The Racist School" I asked God to use this school in my life. I asked God to teach me His lessons even if I hate it. And well, I guess he answered my prayers. If your parents are making you go against your will, pray about it and talk to them! On your part: God never promised that Christianity was going to be easy. On their part: you can't force your kids to be holy. If you truly believe God is leading you somewhere else, than by all means, go somewhere else! Please. They've even said that here at BJU chapel. Tell your parents that I've met enough unhappy students who's parents forced them to come here. You're old enough to choose for yourself. Just keep in mind that people love to complain . . . especially about those God-loving Christians. And my advice would be to picture the people who write those University reviews. Does the person who is writing the article really strike you as someone you want to be like? someone you want to follow? So anyway, if you hate rules, you'd be pretty stupid to go to BJU. And if you hate Christians, you'd have to be pretty stupid to go to BJU. But ya know, I chose to go here, my parents don't control my life, it's only four years, and I can handle it. There were some good, some bad and a whole lot of ugly. But I think I'll survive.
Overall, BJU will be an experience I'll never forget. And someday I'll have the weirdest stories to tell my grandkids. I'll be able to say "I survived."

I was "forced" to attend BJU even though I won a complete ROTC scholarship to a real college. OK, I wasn't forced, but I was very young and sought to placate my parents who threatened me with alienation if I didn't go. Well, I went and I got alienated from my parents anyway. They completely screwed my mind up from the constant monitoring, being "told on" all the time, and appearing at the Discipline Committee for infractions like not having my top button buttoned. I actually thought that someone there would be a Christian, but I found out that most of them were role-playing just to accommodate the oppressive regime. There was always good sex and drinking there, but you had to be very careful not to get caught. Most of the academics were good, but they loaded down my schedule with all these liberal arts requirements so that gaining the essential knowledge for my field was impossible.

Preferential treatment was always given to Fine Arts and to people who would talk that funny "Vesper Speak." Their bizarre idea of cultured religion has infiltrated almost every Baptist Church in Greenville and probably in a lot of other places too.

Because I was not a part of the Bob Jones pipeline network of private schools, I really didn't fit in. Being ostracized coupled with the disillusionment to make for a very lonely experience. I was afraid to seek any type of counsel because I new several who did and got either campused or expelled for having defiant attitudes. I became severely introverted and depressed and nobody really gave a shit. Yeah, I learned a few things, but going there did not make my parents happy and they won't have anything to do with me now because I finally grew up and learned to make decisions for myself. It's been almost 20 years and I still have trouble coping with the pain and hurt that I encountered there.

Unless you are already "one of them," you probably shouldn't consider going to BJU.

Not having a choice of where I went to college, I graced the hallowed halls of BJU in 97. I will preface by saying that BJ does have an incredible education system. BUT because there are issues with the school and it's reputation, having it on your resume is not exactly something that is revered. I have learned since leaving that place, that there is such a false sense of who GOD truly is at BJU. They have claims of being loving, godly, "open-minded" people who do not stray from their faith. The problem is, their faith is not in Christ Jesus, it is in their works (dress, activities-or lack thereof). On campus (and off) the emphasis is not placed on having a good relationship with Christ and being loving toward others, it is based on what rules are you following in the handbook. They forget that one can follow those rules and still have a heart full of sin. But the accolades are given to the student who has short hair and a heart full of pride..which is a sin just as murder and lying is a sin.., and the one who has a relationship with God, but may like to openly listen to U2 gets expelled. It's all based on an outward appearance of "goodness". In my opinion, I believe that Jesus Christ is not a factor on that campus. If you study the life of Christ, he is full of love toward everyone he comes across. He sat with the sinners, and lovingly listened to them and they saw there was something different in who Christ was. It wasn't because of what he was wearing and what activities he didn't participate in.... (side note....jesus did sit with the prostitues and sinners and he did eat and DRINK with them...remember the pharasees called him a drunkard and a glutton??)-- it was because of his LOVE for them. He saw past their sin and loved them through it. BJU does NOT do that. If someone is struggling with sin, they are sent home. No efforts to love and restore them are made. Our God is full of grace toward us as sinners, but those at BJU seem to feel that grace is not to be extended to those who go against their handbook.
The rules aren't a big deal. Are they strange? Yes. But they are just rules. The thing that makes the rules a problem is when they equate the rules with godliness and scripture. The Bible says that it is a sin to add or take away anything from scripture. So when you are making man's preferences into "God's preferences" without having biblical backup, that would be considered sin in God's eyes.
I will say that this is NOT a universal characterization of all students and staff at BJU. But it is the majority feeling. The Dean of Students is the one man who holds to these views more so than anyone else I know. There are "normal" people, who do Love God and who are "real". Overall, the place is not somewhere that I will allow my children to go. I do not want to cloud my children's minds with this false view of who Christ is.
The positives of this university lie in the fact that I met my husband and dear friends who have all shared in this feeling of frustration toward the university.
There are many great colleges in this country that are Christ centered. Bob Jones, I must admit is not one of them.
