BJU's greatest selling points are:

1. dedicated, caring, qualified faculty - individual professors influenced my life more than any other factor

2. liberal arts focus - it's not what you do with your education; it's what it does to you
3. critical thinking - a faith-based school that does not brainwash
4. cultural education - frequent required and optional guest performers and speakers
You have probably heard many negative comments about BJU, and I'm not pretending it is Utopia (neither do they). It seems to me that a number of graduates and former students misunderstood what BJU was trying to accomplish and have come away bitter. I find that very unfortunate for the individuals and the organization. BJU could probably make some changes to help avoid that reaction. But my experience was overwhelmingly positive, and I do not regret my years there. You should definitely visit before you make up your mind.

Anyone attending BJU needs to understand a few things about the school. It is up to you to decide whether they are good or bad.

First, it is a liberal arts college. You will be taking scads of courses that have nothing whatever to do with your major.

Second, it is a fundamental, bible believing and teaching school. there are serious rules to be followed about dress, behavior, and dating. They are rigidly enforced with a vast network of snitches.

Thirdly, it is a niche school. Outside of BJU circles your degree may not be recognized and sometimes you may need to apologize for the school in interviews. To many people, it is still perceived as a racist, narrow minded cult and to be honest, it is.

I found the school to be cold, unfriendly and almost hostile to male students. The students are perceived as the enemy to the reputation of the school, so they must be watched and controlled with fanatical energy.

Only my naivete kept me at the school after a snitch reported me for taking too long a shower.
In four years my student advisor saw me for 10 minutes my junior year and only then after I about beat his door down.

All told I had one teacher that I thought cared about me. The others made it abundantly clear I was little more than a worm to them to be tolerated. I believe to this day some of them never did learn my name even after taking several classes with them.

The rules are not really that big a deal but the worst part is the head games they play with snitches, monitors, roommates and other spies they use to make sure no one will harm the all important reputation of the school. Which is laughable considering the reputation of the school outside of BJU circles. Understand this, you are not worth anything to them. They care only about the reputation of the school.

Students are slave labor for them. You will never know what you are being paid, the hours that were reported for you, or anything else you should be able to know.Getting the idea yet??

Bob Jones University was the worst experience of my life and the lack of sufficient education I received there has haunted me every day of my life. I was a "work scholarship" student and never had any idea what I was being paid and how much was being applied to my account. When I wasn't taking classes, I was working and when I wasn't working or in classes, I was studying. No time for any kind of social life at all. One of my classmates from Korea was expelled because she was dating a caucasion "town" student. They both were kicked out. I really struggled whether to stay in the school or not. I also struggled about switching to a different major (my classes carried no credits - after three exhausting, torturous years, I had a worthless education - nothing transferred over when I wanted to continue my education in a university in my home state. I had been recommended to a local biblical university when I trusted Christ as my savior and should have attended the local school but my pastor told me to go to BJU and I did. I kept saying to myself, "I don't understand. If I've been saved by grace, why do I feel like I'm under the law again?" That's the worst part about attending BJU, especially if you're a brand new Christian. It poisons you and makes you feel afraid. It robs your joy. They ask you questions about your behavior and if you tell the truth, and they don't like your answer, you're punished for the truth. A lot of students lied because they didn't want to lose their rank. I was not raised in a Christian home and this place taught me all the things I DID NOT WANT TO DO to my children when I raised them to know the Lord and find joy and freedom in serving Him by GRACE and FAITH. The law will never make you holy and BJU is extremely legalistic.
