Bob Jones University gave me a solid foundation for my life's work (band and choral direction, compostion and hymnology) in high school, college and seminary levels of education. I went on for graduate studies at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, the Ohio State University in Columbus, and the D.M.A. degree at the Southwestern Baptist Theological seminary. I have taught sacred music in four countries and authored several books; recorded several choral groups; composed many hymns and Scriptural songs. I presently teach sacred music at Puebla Bible Seminary (Mexico) and Rio Grande Bible Seminary (Texas) and have played trumpet and/or tuba in five symphony orchestras in four countries: USA, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Mexico.

Bob Jones University is not the school for everyone because it does not try for "mass-market appeal." Obviously, it's student code is widely known for being very strict and its religious affiliations are quite conservative. However, the rules are not unbearable and do have their benefits (i.e. not allowing rock music can be annoying but also makes for much easier studying; likewise, the curfew is limiting but does force you to get more sleep). I've also been quite impressed with the tolerance of diverging viewpoints in the classroom. Unlike secular schools, BJU does not try to be "politically correct," but as long as you are not openly rebellious, they will not force you to accept their views. (That's not to say they won't tell you their views.) Basically, if you are a conservative evangelical and do not mind submitting to a strict set of rules, you will quite enjoy your time at BJU.

As with everything that is run by imperfect people, there are imperfections and issues that arise even in a Christ-centered Christian University. Your outcome depends on your attitude! If you will not submit to authority, you will have a hard time. But if you will allow the Lord to use this time in your life to draw you closer to Him, it will be a wonderful experience. I love BJU! :) God has shown me so much of Himself through everything I see there - don't take it for granted!
