I am a student who will transfer to a four year university (already accepted) in the fall of 2009. Columbia State has been a great place to pick up my first two years of credits, learn more about what I wanted to do and grow as a student.

Columbia State offers four semesters of Music Theory which was a wonderful plus while I was picking up my general education credits.

The faculty has a few weaker performers - but overall I found class size to be great (no mega classes with 100 students taught by a grad student). The professors are approachable and helpful. Most of them know their areas and they really do care about students. You aren't just a number. The main campus is lovely.

I spent four and a half years in the Navy and was discharged in 2003. Two years later I enrolled at CSCC for an Associate's degree in Computer Information Systems. I was told beforehand that it was a good school with good programs. This was coming from CSCC's faculty.

Since then, I have had several instructors that weren't up to par on their teaching. One teacher read straight from the book during his lectures and tested over information that was insignificant to the class. After two tests, he began making all tests open-book.

My speech teacher also worked at prison. He made sure the first night that if we weren't paying attention or if a cell phone wasn't turned off, we would be sent home with a failing grade for that night. The way I see it is that we are all adults there and should be treated as such.

Economics teacher told the entire class that we were all "idiots" and didn't know how to learn.

I live in Loretto, TN and the nearest campus is in Lawrencburg, which is in the same county. My classes eventually had to move to Columbia and then to Franklin which is a two hour drive almost. The Franklin class is a hybrid class and only lasts for about half of the semester. Sometimes my instructor would cancel that class. He was very unprepared for it and at the last minute, all computers were removed from the room to be taken to the main campus in Columbia. This caused us to miss some labs.

An Algebra instructor I had, showed up late or not at all, several times. When he showed up late, his eyes would be bloodshot and he would smell of alcohol.

There are some good instructors at this school and I have had a few. It only takes one bad apple to ruin the rest. This school should seriously stop and take a look at what is going on.

Before you attend this school, do some research and ask people about their experiences with it. I cannot express my disappointment with this school. Unless you just want to get your GPA up, or get some credits that you didn't get from a better school, I highly suggest taking the time to find another school with better programs and instructors.

Run, run, as fast as you can from the Nursing program at Columbia State. The 2nd semester instructors do not know how to teach and therefore they don't (lectures that are supposed to be 2 1/2 hrs typically are 30 minutes, then you're told to go home, read 200 pages by the next class, and "know it all"). Instructors are inacessible (no posted office hours...I was told to send an email with my question). My instructors for nursing pre-reqs in the science and psychology departments were outstanding: knowledgable, knew how to teach, cared that their students were learning. The opposite can be said of the nursing II instructors. Don't waste your time here if you want to be a skilled RN.
