I graduated number 15 in my high school class and always aspired to go on to a well-known school that would really set me up with a successful career. A SLI and ASL major, the realization that very few schools offered strong sign language programs was a quick shock. It was not long before I realized staying at home (Ohio) was not going to be possible if I really wanted a good education. With the help of PrepHQ.com, I stumbled upon Maryville College and pretty much fell in love! While I was slightly weary of the small size of the student body at first, the idea of a campus centered in a small, secure community while also centered near the beauty of the mountains and the night life and business of Knoxville was undeniably attractive. Not only has Maryville College made a great name for itself as one of the best Liberal Art schools in the south, it truly prepares its students for career world and making a valuable impression. While the college is quite expensive, the college offers many scholarships to students with high ACT scores and, if your a Tennessee resident, even more money with the lottery. Other people on here have written they dislike the school because it wasn't a party school or was impossible to find fun. I have to disagree- it simply depends what you make of it. If you're an outgoing individual and willing to get involved, MC is the place for you! However, if you are reserved and expect the party to come to you, you will find your self spending weekends stuck in your dorm. The surrounding city/town, while small, really does not have the impression of a "ghost town." There is plenty to do simply within Maryville: a nice size shopping mall and movie theater, a sweet bike/running path, the historic district, a flea market, etc. And if that doesn't satisfy your fun-o-meter then Knoxville's only a 15 min. drive away with sweet bars, dance clubs, and shopping. All in all, Maryville College is what you make of it. If you're willing to work hard and throw yourself into the huge workload of the school week, and then are creative and outgoing with finding fun during the weekends, you'll do great!

Maryville College is, for the most part, a welcoming place full of friendly people. Professors are extremely helpful and as you become upperclassmen, the professors really do treat you like friends and invite you to their homes for dinner. Although the coursework is extremely hard, it is very rewarding. However the one negative I have encountered is in financial aid. The people in financial aid are not friendly or welcoming-- and yes, I understand the financial aid office is not the most comforting place to be, but I feel like the people should be understanding and helpful instead of vindictive and conniving.

Maryville is a smaller town, but there is still plenty to do--tons of great food, music, bars, etc. Downtown Knoxville is less than 20 minutes away, and the Smoky Mtns are 20 minutes away. You're not just a number at this school, you get quality attention from knowledgeable professors (more than 90% of professors have their doctorate). You can jump in on research projects with the professors, which looks really good on your resume. I loved the time I spent there, I'd go back in a heartbeat.
