 | Quite Bright | LEAVE HOME TO ATTEND COLLEGE, IF AT ALL FEASIBLE (ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIVE IN MEMPHIS). Try another locale to give yourself a chance to grow on your own and find your own way...it would be almost impossible to do this under mam and dad's roof! Furthermore, Memphis is a very provincial and isolated city. There are decent amenties, but the usable area of the city, relatively free of poverty, ignorance and crime is VERY small for a city of its size. | Preparedness: F, Reputation: F | | |

| | Quite Bright | (I also wrote a review under the Current Undergraduates section.) I would NEVER attend U of M again (then known as Memphis State, or known by many as "Tiger High") if I had the chance to redo my college years. I would have left Memphis for college and likely never returned, though I can say my life (family, career, etc.) have turned out very well, and I'm quite happy. I can also say U of M had NOTHING to do with it at all. I learned from good friends who attended far better universities out of Memphis (as well as Rhodes College in Memphis) the value of learning. I had to work through college, which did a far better job of preparing me for my career.U of M had far too many students ill-prepared for college work, which made it unpleasant for those who were ready for college. DON'T GO TO U OF M!! | Starting Job: First VP, Preparedness: D, Reputation: F | | |

| | Quite Bright | Though I graduated almost 20 years ago, I felt I had to comment on my experiences. My only true regret in life, from an academic and life experience standpoint, was to attend U of M (then known as Memphis State), my hometown university. (I now firmly believe one should leave home for college to get the best chance to fully take advantage of college life and the opportunities for personal growth available.) I must admit I didn't try very hard in college, thereby making the situation more difficult, but I was relatively involved in the university and can speak to the overall experience. I found U of M to be a generic, cold and overall fair to poor university where many of the students were not prepared for college and where students were nothing more than a number. I would be heartbroken if my daughter chose to limit her opportunities to the point of attending what locals refered to as "Tiger High". (The tiger is U of M's mascot.) Perhaps things have improved in overall quality, but my sense is that a few new buildings are not enough to make the university any better than it was when I was there. In addition, in my view, Memphis would not be a very nice or fun city for many college students. The area around the university has some security issues and the city itself is located in an area with no mountains, no usable water for recreation, and very little charm. | Faculty Accessibility: C+, Individual Value: F | | | |
