 | Average | This school is very very easy, there is not really a challenging class, which I don't know is a good or bad thing. We need new buildings and other facilities, classes are over crowded and there are other problems that exists. The is a ton of crime on and near campus, so always walk in groups. Living on campus is not bad, but it is not like a traditional college like my friends attend. The city of Memphis gives strong support to our athletic program; however, everywhere outside the city, everything revolves around UT and the rest of the SEC. | Education Quality: B+, Perceived Campus Safety: F | | | |

| | Quite Bright | Though I graduated almost 20 years ago, I felt I had to comment on my experiences. My only true regret in life, from an academic and life experience standpoint, was to attend U of M (then known as Memphis State), my hometown university. (I now firmly believe one should leave home for college to get the best chance to fully take advantage of college life and the opportunities for personal growth available.) I must admit I didn't try very hard in college, thereby making the situation more difficult, but I was relatively involved in the university and can speak to the overall experience. I found U of M to be a generic, cold and overall fair to poor university where many of the students were not prepared for college and where students were nothing more than a number. I would be heartbroken if my daughter chose to limit her opportunities to the point of attending what locals refered to as "Tiger High". (The tiger is U of M's mascot.) Perhaps things have improved in overall quality, but my sense is that a few new buildings are not enough to make the university any better than it was when I was there. In addition, in my view, Memphis would not be a very nice or fun city for many college students. The area around the university has some security issues and the city itself is located in an area with no mountains, no usable water for recreation, and very little charm. | Faculty Accessibility: C+, Individual Value: F | | | |

| | Bright | The first thing that I would say to somebody considering studying in Memphis who doesn't come from there is this: I lived in Memphis for 13 years and most people I met who didn't come from Memphis didn't like it there. The U of M is located in the middle of Memphis, and most places within the Memphis City Limits are dangerous. Also, the public transportation in Memphis is very bad. As for the university itself, from an academic standpoint, it's not too bad. In my experience, the professors are fairly good, and I had some interesting classes. However, from an administrative standpoint, the school is very badly run. The residence halls are very loud, and there are a lot of tough kids on campus. It's outrageous when there's no quiet place to study for the classes which you're going into debt to pay for. Also, the bathroom facilities are inadequate, as the shower stalls have no locks. The kitchen facilities are also inadequate, in my residence hall, one kitchen had to be shared by two floors of students. My advice is that if you study at the University of Memphis, don't live on campus. | Faculty Accessibility: B+, Campus Maintenance: F | | | |
