Greek life rules here. Not so brightAstronomy
Greek life rules here. If you don't like fraternities or sororities, don't come here. It's also segregated. Usually you'll see people of their own race hanging out with each other and not much of anything else. The black people have their Greek stuff, and the white people have theirs. It's incredibly country. If you're from the city like me, it'll probably be culture shock for a few weeks. There's not much variety in people. The academics aren't really that challenging. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you don't like Greek life and if you want to go to a school that's more liberal. There's not very many places to hang out. People are nice but if you come here and don't have friends already here, it might be hard to really connect to anyone. If you're a country person, and you love camouflage, then this is probably the school for you. If you want a place that's more urban, and liberal go somewhere else.

Question
If you are white and racist you willBrightSocial Work
If you are white and racist you will love it here. This is almost stereotypical of a southern small town: full of hillbilly racists. All I ever heard on campus were people talking about 1. hunting 2. drinking 3. racist comments 4. trucks 5. fishing. I am white and from the north and I was scared all southern schools were like this, but it's just Martin. It's just sad how 1960's this school is. There were lots of pregnant girls and young girls who already had three kids. One person just informed me "that's how the south is." There's nothing to do in that town (probably how all those girls got pregnant...) except eating or going to walmart. At SOAR they make it sound like so much goes on at campus, but it's really all just smoke and mirrors to get you to attend. The teachers were nice, I loved all my teachers, but the atmosphere is just terrible, very clique-y, separated by race. I don't think the black people had problems with the whites, it was whites who just trash talked anyone of "color." For example, I was asked by some hillbilly if I was trying to become a "sand-n***er" because I was laying outside with my Saudi Arabian friend.Thank God I'm transferring to Knoxville this Fall.

This school simply isSuper BrilliantCommunications
This school simply is not worth going to. PLain and simple. You would be better off at any of the other UT's. Do not let this place lie to you when you come to SOAR. This place is dangerous and is contains a lot of stupid closed-mind people.
