This university is a complete catastrophe. Advising is non-existent. I know several students who are unable to graduate within the expected timeframe because the university does not teach the courses required for graduation / licensure for extended periods of time. Advising does not advise of when courses will / won't be offered so students can plan their schedules accordingly. Several students were told they could not take a couple of courses (graduation requirements) until their senior year. When attempted to register for senior year, were told that courses were not being offered, and they would be required to wait and take the course 1 - 1 1/2+ years later. The university administration is completely and entirely incompentent also. Everything from student accounts to financial aid and registration are mismanaged. I experienced several semesters where, after 2 full years of enrollment, a registration hold was placed on my account that said that I had to provide evidence that I had been admitted into the program before I could register for classes. The administration did not even seem to be capable of making the comman sense conclusion that 2 years of enrollment with a 3.8 gpa just might indicate acceptance into the program! The financial aid department loses student loan refunds virtually every semester. Refunds that are supposed to post 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the semester, don't usually post for 1+ months after the semester begins, and only after extensive time spent visiting and revisiting the financial aid office (don't answer phones), and fighting through a plethora excuses, IT failures, wild goose chases and other causes - all resulting from the incompetency of the administration. I would NEVER recommend this university to ANYONE for ANYTHING, and would not had chosen this university had I known what I know now. I will likely be required to take courses elsewhere to finish my degree, but only after going through the application process AGAIN, the transfer process, etc. etc.

If you want credentials for a job and could care less about rigor, get a master's in history from SHSU. If you want a serious history degree, don't bother. Although a fair few of the gradaute students are competitive, most are horribly underprepared for gradaute work. It baffles me to think that this department is handing out M.A.s for such low quality work.

In general, the "graduate" program in history at SHSU is upper-division undergraduate quality, at best.

History/Histories (art history/etc.)

The university and students in general are both wonderful but I would not choose this particular graduate program again.
