Sul Ross has a few programs for which it is highly suited. I'm a geology major and I can say that the program is excellent, and the Trans-Pecos region is a wonderful "classroom" for geosciences. If you want a business or law degree, search elsewhere. The math department is above average, while the computer science department is absolute crap. Education majors will contend with many poor teachers, while science majors will find the faculty and staff more than adequate.

I don't regret my year here at Sul Ross, but likewise I wouldn't recommend the place for anyone truly seeking academia and the rigors of university life. The academic extracurriculars that are stellar (all one or two of them) are poorly funded. On the flip side, some people --though perhaps not brilliant people-- are very friendly, and you'll be surprised how much you can find to do in a tiny town. If you like drinking every weeknight, easy grades, and you don't need too many cultural stimuli, SRSU might be right up your alley.

Sully is a great place to be. The campus is situated alongside the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. There is a lot of Texas mystique in the surrounding area. Some folks here think the campus is isolated but the reality is that we are in a small town that is creative in community activities. There are hot-air balloons, marathons, restaurants, and a national park not far away. In addition the McDonald Observatory is an impressive facility about 45 minutes away. SR is a good place to focus on one's study and one's self. I highly recommend it.
