I'm a junior at Texas State. First off, let me say that it's a great place to go to school, but also small enough to where it's not very overwhelming. I'll touch on a few of the basics here, that will hopefully answer some questions you've got.

Academics: Always plenty of courses to choose from, and if you can't get into the class you want; try talking to the professors. They always have a few hours every week where they are required to talk with students; make use of this time!! Some professors/classes are easier than others...ask around if you're not sure. All in all, it's not a cakewalk; but your university experience shouldn't be.

Residence Halls: You're required to live on campus for 2 yrs (they're talking about changing that requirement though) You'll probably have to live in a community style your first yr (it's not as bad as you think) Try to get into Residential College...they have better res halls, and you go to classes with the ppl you live with. Trust me, it's WELL worth it when you need help with a certain class!!!

Food: The food isn't too bad on campus. General rule of thumb: go to the buffet places for breakfast, and the others for lunch/dinner. You have to get a meal plan; but the food is pretty good, especially at Jones and the Den.

Sports: Texas State is Div 1 in everything except for football. All students get into every athletic event for free, so it's a nice, affordable option. Most of the teams are decent. The men's Basketball team is turning it around and will be really good in a few years. The women's volleyball team is always good and competes with UT and UTSA often.

Students: All in all, this is a great campus for beautiful girls. Every day you'll see plenty of hot women walking around...you won't be dissapointed! Most everyone is pretty chill, some of the Greeks are kinda snotty and standoffish...but most everyone else is really laid back. Don't feel obligated to go Greek. Most of the student population isn't Greek.

Surrounding area: San Marcos is a small town, with ok nitelife...there's a stretch of bars to go to, but it's best going 30 min north to Austin. San Antonio is only 45 min south...so there's plenty of options if you don't feel like staying in SM. There's always a party somewhere in town, so if that's what you're in to, you won't be dissapointed.

So those are pretty much the highlights of campus. Texas State is definatley worth a look. Check it out, you won't be dissapointed!

Not so bright
The accounting program at Texas State University is one of the best in the state, consistently placing students with big four accounting firms in Houston, Dallas, and to a lesser extent Austin and San Antonio. Hopefully more reviews about the school will revolve around the academics and job placement, rather than the frats, whom I just ignored or treated like they were handicapped. Little known fact, the geography department at Texas State is one of the very best in the nation.

I transfered to Texas State from Austin College (a small private school in Sherman,Tx) in the Fall of '08. My first semester was a real slap in the face for me. I was used to a small campus with very short walking distances around campus and small class sizes. At State i had AT LEAST a 15 minute walk everywhere, and my smallest class to date since ive been there was about 75-100 whether everyone was there or not. I also found the classes to be very challenging. First Semester there i took all core classes (basics) just to get a few out of the way. I honestly wish i took those at a junior college somewhere because they kicked my ass. but second semester I began taking classes more toward my major and minor and im having a blast and i havent missed a single class yet. It's really about what you're interested in and who/how it's being taught to you that will fuel you're success at this school academically.

Socially, if you played sports in high school I highly recommend joining a sports club. It's a great way to meet new people, stay in shape, and have an awesome time. For example, I joined the Rugby team here. The guys on that team are like brothers to me, we are very successful, and we know how to party. They are also very efficient about having us keep our grades up and understand when we cant make games or practices because of tests/projects. That's just one example of the MANY things you can do at State, but if you're not much of a team player, we just redid our Recreation Center on West Campus and it's amazing. Plenty of lifting stations, an indoor pool and track, and plenty of basketball and raquetball courts to fit your needs.

I've always wanted to go to this school since i was a little kid when I found out how awesome it is, and now I'm living it and I don't ever want to leave.

Best decision I've ever made.

I only attended Sputhwest for a semester, and the experience was pretty forgettable. I think there are certain attributes one should have if they are going to go to this school. The social scene is for the most part made up of drinking till you pass out, making 30 minute drives to Austin so you can drink till you pass out, or being involved in the Greek system somehow. I found that most of the people who attended SWT were from tiny towns or from town I had never heard of or both. It's not a very cultured or refined atmosphere and a lot of the student population is similar. The school doesn't carry a lot of prestige or provide a particularly good education, but it's not a bad school. It's just very blah, whatever, nuetral. Some people love it and that's good for them. If you want to go to a university with a more challenging curriculum, cultured atmosphere, and have relationships with a people you can connect with on a deeper, more intellectual and emotional level, this may not be the place for you. This was just my experience though, and it might turn out the opposite for you. Good luck!
